INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Quincy University’s Becky Fleming (Florissant, Mo.) and teammate Laura Gentry (St. Louis, Mo.) are the 2006 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. The pair helped guide the Lady Hawks to a record-breaking season and to the GLVC regular season title.
Fleming, a forward for Quincy, is also the recipient of the GLVC Freshman of the Year Award. She made an immediate impact for the Lady Hawks and posted 12 goals and three assists in conference play this season. She led the league in goals and points (27).
Overall in 2006, Fleming had a league-best 42 points as she contributed 18 goals and six assists for the Lady Hawks.
Gentry, a senior back, helped pace a strong Quincy defense. She led a team that surrendered just 18 goals on the year and posted a goals against average of 1.00. The team captain also chipped in an assist in conference play.
She was charged with leading a back line consisting of three first-year players and guided the Lady Hawks to the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament.
The Lady Hawks, led by first-year coach Dave Musso, finished the regular season with a 15-3-0 overall record and 11-2-0 mark in the GLVC. For his efforts, Musso has been recognized by his peers as the 2006 GLVC Coach of the Year.
Quincy jumped out to a school-record 13-match winning streak and clinched the top seed for the GLVC Championship by one game. Musso’s Lady Hawks have outscored opponents 51-18 this season.
Fleming and Gentry headline the 11-member All-GLVC First Team. Joining them with first-team honors is Bellarmine University’s Jaime Halas and Marisa Larkin, Missouri-Rolla’s Brittany Parker, Missouri-St. Louis’ Rachel Lee, Northern Kentucky’s Jayme Light, Quincy’s Rachel Poepsel, Rockhurst University’s Lindsay Ewert, SIU Edwardsville’s Padra Bencini and UW-Parkside’s Laura Eide.
