INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Quincy University’s Becky Fleming (Florissant, Mo.) and Drury University’s Jessie Sanderson (Jefferson City, Mo.) are the 2007 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. Fleming, a sophomore for the Lady Hawks, led her club to a second-place finish in the GLVC standings and Sanderson, a freshman, earned the league’s top defensive honor in her first season in the league.
Fleming, a midfielder for the Lady Hawks, posted seven goals and four assists in 13 conference contests. She finished fourth in the league in points with 18 and second in the league in goals to earn her second consecutive GLVC Offensive Player of the Year Award. Fleming also posted a league-best four game-winning goals.
Overall in 2007, Fleming has scored 11 goals and seven assists for a total of 29 points. She leads the league in shots with 79 and has scored six game-winning goals. Her efforts have helped the Lady Hawks to a 13-4-1 overall record and to a 10-3 conference mark. The Lady Hawks will be the No. 2 seed for the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
Sanderson made a big splash as a freshman in the GLVC in 2007. She led the league during the conference season in goals against average (0.37), save percentage (.933) and shutouts (8). Sanderson has also been awarded the GLVC Freshman of the Year Award for her strong efforts. She helped the Panthers to a third-place finish in the GLVC with an 8-3-2 record.
Drury is 12-4-2 overall and allowed just seven goals this season to rank third in the nation in goals against average (0.376). Sanderson is second in the nation in save percentage (0.922) and seventh in goals against average (0.409). She has posted nine shutouts overall in 2007 and collected 83 saves while surrendering seven goals.
SIU Edwardsville finished first in the GLVC standings this season and is the top seed for the upcoming GLVC Tournament. Head coach Lynda Bowers, in her fifth season with the Cougars, has led her club to a 12-3-1 record overall and secured the regular season title with an 11-2 conference mark.
Bowers has been named the 2007 GLVC Coach of the Year for her efforts. The Cougars, ranked second in the Great Lakes Region and 16th in the latest NSCAA/adidas Top 25 Poll, are currently riding a nine-match winning streak and have used the run to surge past the rest of the GLVC. Bowers is 67-27-4 in her four-plus years with SIUE and will be looking to guide the Cougars to the school’s first GLVC Championship in the coming weeks.
Fleming and Sanderson headline the 11-member All-GLVC First Team. Joining them with first-team honors are Drury’s Chloe Moushey, Missouri-St. Louis’ Tara Reitz, Saint Joseph’s Rachel Cobean, SIU Edwardsville’s Katie Yearian, Elizabeth Valenti and Kelly Limpert, UIndy’s Ashley Seehase and Amanda Reese and UW-Parkside’s Brittany Kaim.
