Eagles Take Fifth Consecutive GLVC Men's Cross Country Title

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team defended its team crown again on Saturday morning at the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship held at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The Eagles posted 36 points to hold off Drury and capture its fifth straight conference championship.

 

Southern Indiana had eight runners finish in the top 20 on Saturday and four runners post top 10 finishes. The Eagles were paced by sophomores Brendan Devine (Bethal, NY) and Dustin Emerick (Elmwood, Ill.) who placed third and fourth, respectively. Devine ran the muddy course in 25:16 and Emerick crossed the line in a time of 25:24.

 

Drury’s Jaime Villa Zapatero (Madrid, Spain) repeated as the meet’s individual winner. Zapatero posted a time of 25:00 to win the race and earn GLVC Runner of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.

 

Northern Kentucky’s Drew Harris (Alexandria, Ky.) was the runner-up at the event for the second straight year as well. Harris, a fourt-time GLVC Runner of the Week winner in 2009, finished the meet in a time of 25:10.

 

Drury posted a team score of 65 points as Derek Berry (Crestwood, Ky.) and Geoff Hughes (Raytown, Mo.) posted strong finishes. Berry placed fifth and Hughes notched a 15-place finish.

 

Bellarmine (90), Indianapolis (120) and Northern Kentucky (157) rounded out the top five teams in an 11-team field.

 

Zapatero, Harris, Devine, Emerick, Berry and Hughes each earned a spot on the All-GLVC Men’s Cross Country Team. Joining them on the team were Saint Joseph’s Naza Sanchez (Rensselaer, Ind.), UW-Parkside’s Ben Orvold (Sussex, Wis.), Southern Indiana’s Andrew Dixon (Petersburg, Ind.), David Goodman (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Brandon Campbell (Portage, Ind.), Bellarmine’s Jordan Parayil (West Chester, Ohio) and Nate Dotterweich (Monticello, Iowa) and UIndy’s Mark Martinez (Rockford, Ill.) and Mike Landy (Indianapolis, Ind.).

 

Southern Indiana’s Mike Hillyard was named the GLVC Coach of the Year following the meet and the Eagles’ Michael Callison (Elnora, Ind.) was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year after finishing 16th with a time of 26:02.
