UIndy's Morrison Leads GLVC AVCA All-American Contingent
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Indianapolis junior setter Cheneta Morrison (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was named a First-Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as announced by the organization on Monday. Morrison is one of five GLVC players to earn All-America honors from the AVCA.
Lewis senior outside hitter Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill.) was named to the Second Team and UIndy's Kyleigh Turner (Muncie, Ind.), a senior libero, was selected as a Third-Team honoree.
Lewis junior setter Rachel Ruedi and UIndy junior outside hitter Lyndsay Callahan each earned honorable mention nods.
Morrison, an All-GLVC First Team selection, guided the Greyhounds to a 38-1 record and their first regional championship in 2009. Nationally ranked in assists per set and helping the squad to the country's sixth-best hitting percentage, Morrison is a first-time AVCA All-American.
Sagat, the GLVC Player of the Year, led the Flyers to a school record setting season with 27 straight victories and a perfect 14-0 record in conference play. Sagat is earning AVCA All-America honors for the first time.
Turner, an All-GLVC First Team selection, holds the school record for most digs in a season and a career. The Greyhounds' four-year starting libero, Turner is among national leaders in digs per set and is a first-time AVCA All-American.
The 2009 All-America selections were made by the AVCA Division II All-America Committee: Laurie Lokash,Slippery Rock University, chairperson; Mario Andaya, Central Washington University; Christy Benner, WheelingJesuit University; Todd Caughlin, St. Mary’s University; Shelton Collier, Wingate University; Debbie Hendricks,Metropolitan State College; Stephanie Radecki, University of North Alabama; Deanne Scanlon, Grand Valley State University and Gail Wasmus, New York Institute of Technology.
