GLVC Announces Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Allyson DeFosset (O’Fallon, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week and University of Indianapolis’ Megan Russell (Indianapolis, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week.
DeFosset guided the Tritons to a 5-1 record last week, including a 4-0 record in league play, by picking up three wins and two saves in the circle.
On the week, DeFosset made five appearances and in 23 and two-thirds innings of work, recorded 46 strikeouts and allowed just 12 hits and no earned runs.
She collected a shutout over Southwest Baptist on Tuesday, a 3-0 decision, after allowing just four hits, no earned runs and striking out 14.
She threw three and one-third innings in the first game against Southern Indiana on Saturday, struck out seven and allowed just one hit to earn a 4-3 victory and returned in the nightcap against the Eagles to grab a save by allowing just two hits and striking out six in two and two-thirds innings.
DeFosset picked up the win in UMSL’s 4-0 shutout of Kentucky Wesleyan in the first game on Sunday. She allowed just three hits and struck out 14 Panthers in the victory. In the nightcap, a 4-3 Tritons’ win, DeFosset pitched three and two-third innings to earn a save.
On the year, DeFosset is 10-3 with a 0.55 ERA and three saves. She has struck out 150 batters in 20 appearances and has recorded nine complete games and five shutouts. DeFosset has allowed just eight earned runs in 102-plus innings of work.
UMSL (17-12) is atop the GLVC standings with a 6-2 league record. The Tritons will face Missouri Southern, Illinois-Springfield and Missouri S&T this week.
Russell, a junior designated player for the Greyhounds, helped her club split a pair of doubleheaders on the road in league action over the weekend.
For the week, she was 5-for-15 (.333) with four runs, eight RBIs and four home runs. Russell belted a home run in each of the Greyhounds’ four games and now sits just one shy of the school’s single-season mark of ten home runs with nine on the year.
Russell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run in UIndy’s 4-2 win at Lewis on Saturday. She followed up with a 1-for-4 effort in the Greyhounds’ 7-4 loss in the nightcap.
She returned to hammer two more home runs on Sunday at UW-Parkside, including the game-tying blast in UIndy’s 3-1 win in the series opener.
In addition, Russell picked up the win in each of UIndy’s two victories. She went the distance and allowed two earned runs and scattered five hits in the victory over Lewis on Saturday and then went all nine innings in the Greyhounds’ 3-1 win over UW-Parkside on Sunday. In the win over the Rangers, Russell allowed just five hits and no earned runs, while striking out nine.
On the year, Russell is hitting .342 with a league-best 24 RBIs, 12 runs and nine home runs. She is also 6-4 in the circle with a 1.39 ERA.
UIndy (13-11) is 5-3 in the GLVC and tied for fifth in the standings. The Greyhounds will host Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine this weekend.
