Lewis Dominates Dick Pond Invite with 12 Combined Victories

Romeoville, Ill. – Familiar surroundings helped the Lewis University track and field teams settle right in at the Lewis’ Recreation Center Fieldhouse, as the Flyer men and women captured a combined 12 events at the annual Dick Pond Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 16) afternoon.

“After being off for nearly a month, we were looking to get our feet wet coming back,” Lewis head track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “We wanted to see how everyone would compete after just two weeks of practice. Now we just have to incrementally get better each week as we prepare for the conference championships.

Lewis sophomore Julie Jarrett (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) earned her first career NCAA Provisional mark in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:16.07. Jarrett’s teammate Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi) finished in second place, crossing the finish line in 2:17.15. Jarrett picked up a second-place finish as well in the high jump (1.50 meters), while teammate Sarah Sielisch (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was third in the same event with a leap of 1.40 meters.

Jarrett and Hague were both on the winning 4x400 relay (4:13.80), along with teammates Maggie Boban (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Danielle Thompson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley).

Another Lewis quartet of Christine Kustra (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove), Michelle Ruff (Palatine, Ill./Fremd), Kamille Ferguson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Molly Szilard (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) was third in the same race with a time of 4:23.40. 

Kustra would later roll to victory in the 400-meter dash (1:00.88), followed by teammatesBoban and Ruff, who finished 1:03.14 and 1:03.90 respectively. The Cary, Ill., native added a third-place in the long jump (4.9 meters).

Lewis senior Ashley Butler (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) took home titles in the 55-meter dash (7.39) and long jump (5.48 meters), while chipping in a third-place mark in the 200-meter dash (27.25) behind runner-up Kayla Murphy (Franklin Grove, Ill./Ashton Franklin Center), who crossed the finish line in 26.33.

Murphy was victorious in the pole vault with a mark of 3.05 meters, while adding another second-place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.41). Junior Kelsey Boland (Brimfield, Ill./Elmwood) earned a second-place finish in the triple jump (10.69 meters) and third-place finish in the pole vault (2.6 meters).

Lewis sophomore Amanda Porter (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley/Shawnee State) took home a second-place finish in the 1-mile run (5:29.64), while teammate Amy Clawson (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) was third with a time of 5:35.46.

Lewis freshman hurdler Jessica Summers-Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) earned a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (9.25).

On the men’s side, senior Austin Bailey (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) was victorious in the 200-meter dash (23.18), followed by a third-place finish of 23.26 from senior Donnie Lesnick (Channahon, Ill./Minooka).

Senior throwing specialist Scott Barnas (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Laurence/Moraine Valley C.C.) won the shot put with an NCAA Provisional throw of 17.07 meters.

Sophomore Scott Tanis (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) took home the 800-meter run title with a time of 1:57.56. Tanis was also a member of the winning 4x400 relay (3:27.97), along with James Knaperek (Hometown, Ill./St. Laurence), Robert Robinson (Hillside, Ill./Trinity/Southern Illinois) and Patrick Walsh (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood/Harper C.C.).

Another Lewis 4x400 relay squad of Lesnick, Pat Reaney (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), Chris Leibrand (Parkville, Mo./Park South) and Aaron Jett (Chicago, Ill./Thornridge/Embry-Riddle) finished in second-place (3:34.12).

Jett finished second overall in the long jump (6.1 meters), while Robinson was third in the same event with a leap of 6.02 meters.

Knaperek also won the 55-meter hurdles (7.8) and pitched in a third-place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.65). Reaneyplaced second in both the 55-meter hurdles (8.65) and high jump (1.90 meters).

Sophomore Lonzo Harris (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) won the high jump (1.90 meters), while junior Matt Schultz (Burbank, Ill./St. Laurence) was second in the pole vault (4.6 meters). 

Lewis freshman John Kolanko (Grayslake, Ill./St. Joseph (Wis.) earned a runner-up finish of 54.22 in the 400-meter dash. Kolanko’s teammate Jacob Hansen (Waukegan, Ill./St. Joseph’s) was second in the 1-mile run (4:41.21), edging Thomas Campbell (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) who crossed the finish line in 4:43.37.

Lewis returns to action next week at the UW-Parkside Ranger Open on Friday (Jan. 22).
