Charleston, Ill. – The Lewis University track and field teams found out on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon, that they match up pretty well against a few Division I squads, as senior Scott Barnas (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Laurence/Moraine Valley C.C.) and junior Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi) each won their respective events and set NCAA Provisional marks in the process at the Illinois Intercollegiate Indoor Meet, hosted by Eastern Illinois at Lantz Fieldhouse.

Barnas took home the shot put title with a heave of 17.03 meters, while Hague won the 1-mile run with a time of 5:04.05. Barnas also set a personal-best in the weight throw with a third-place toss of 17.02 meters.

Saturday’s meet featured Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

“It was a small, but really competitive meet with some good Division I teams, so it was a big step up in terms of competition,” Lewis head track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “Some handled the pressure real well, while others were a bit shell-shocked. This meet will serve us real well as we get closer to conference championships.”

Lewis junior Matt Schultz (Burbank, Ill./St. Laurence) took home the pole vault with a mark of 4.65 meters.

Flyer freshman Amy Clawson (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) placed second overall in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 18:34.28, while sophomore Amanda Porter (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley/Shawnee State) was runner-up in the 3,000-meter run (10:34.33).

Lewis returns to action next weekend, as they travel to Ohio to participate in the DII Challenge, hosted by Findlay.
