UIndy's Meissel Named to Daktronics All-America Third Team

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – University of Indianapolis junior forward Samantha Meissel (Terre Haute, Ind.) has been named to the Daktronics, Inc. Women's Basketball All-America Third Team. Meissel, the 2010 GLVC Player of the Year, helped lead UIndy to a 26-4 overall record and to the No. 2 seed in the NCAA II Midwest Regional. She averaged 19.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on the year.

Johannah Leedham of Franklin Pierce has been named the 2010 Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Year as she leads the All-American team for the 2009-10 season.

The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The team is voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)

The 2010 women’s basketball Daktronics All-American Team is comprised of three seniors, a junior and a freshman, including a three-time and a four-time All-America selection.

Leedham, the four-time All-American, was joined by three-time All-American selection Lauren Beckley of Shippensburg, Mariesa Greene of Barry, Jasmine Gunn of Tusculum and Veronica Walker of Delta State.

The second team consists of Cassondra Boston of Emporia State, Catherine Carr of Holy Family, Tori Hansen of West Liberty State, Amelia Simmons of Wimlington and Katie Wysocky of Michigan Tech.

On the third team is Sarita Cooper of Delta State, Samantha Meissel of Indianapolis, Jamie Meyer of Abilene Christian, Kaitlin Petri of Chadron State and Brittney Taylor of Humboldt State.

Leedham, a senior forward from Ellesmeere Port, England, is on the Daktronics All-America team for the fourth straight season after claiming second team honors in 2009 and third team honors in both 2007 and 2008. She is the 2010 Northeast 10 Player of the Year and was a Preseason National Player of the Year. Leedham broke the school and conference career scoring record for both the men’s and women’s totals this season. She ranks second in NCAA Division II history with 2,828 career points and ninth with 431 career steals. Leedham leads the nation in scoring and ranks second in steals this season. She is averaging 26.7 points per game and has 115 steals. The Player of the Year is averaging 8.3 rebounds per game and shoots .501 from the floor in 2009-10. Leedham was her conference’s weekly award winner seven times. She has been named British Basketballs Olympic Athlete of the Year and is the English National Player of the Year. She was named an honorable mention Player of the Decade and broke the Northeast 10’s records for career free throws, steals and field goals this season. She helped her team to a No. 1 national ranking during the season as well.

Beckley, a senior forward from Fairfield, Pa., is the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference East Player of the Year, and she is the league’s all-time leading scorer. She is the fifth player in PSAC history with 2,000-plus points and 1,000-plus rebounds. She led the PSAC in scoring with 21.8 points per game (fifth in Division II) and ranked second in rebounding with 10.1 boards per game (15th in Division II). She scored a season high 43 points in a game while making a school record 21-of-25 free throws. Beckley scored in double figures in 29 of 308 games played in her career and had 13 double-doubles this season for 59 in her career. She is an 88.7 percent free throw shooter and ranks No. 16 in Division II history for points. Beckley set a school record for career three-pointers and free throws. 

Greene, a senior forward from Barry, is first in scoring in the Sunshine State Conference in scoring, rebounds and field goal percentage. The senior averages 19.4 points per game, 10.7 rebounds per outing and is averaging .601 from the floor. Greene is sixth nationally in field goal percentage, 19th in points per game and 10th in rebounds per game. She had 19 double-doubles in 30 games played. Her season high was 32 points and 25 rebounds against Florida Tech. Greene earned the SSC Player of the Week Award four times this season and was named to the 2010 First-Team All-District III CoSIDA Academic Team. Greene is the South Region Daktronics Player f the Year and a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America finalist after being named the SSC Player of the Year.

Gunn, a junior guard from Nashville, Tenn., helped her team to the South Atlantic Conference title after averaging 21.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Her team was also a regional finalist while she is a WBCA All-American national finalist herself. Gunn is the 2010 Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year. She averages 4.9 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She ranks No. 13 in the nation in scoring, No. 17 in steals and No. 32 in assists. She is the only player in the NCAA to rank in the top 35 in all three categories. In the conference, Gunn ranks second in scoring, second in assists, first in steals and fourth in assist/turnover ratio. She has 18 20-point game, four 30-point games and one 40-point game. She had four double-doubles and a triple-double this season. Gunn scored a record 45 points in the region semifinal and holds NCAA tournament records with 23 free throws made and 29 free throws attempted. The free throws attempted is also an NCAA record.

Walker, a sophomore from Indianola, Ind., helped the Lady Statesmen to a 25-3 record and a berth in the NCAA South Regional. She is the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Year and was a first team all-conference selection. Walker ranks first in the nation in field goal percentage (.650), No. 11 in scoring (20.8), No. 22 in rebounds (9.8) and No. 9 in blocks (1.29). She leads the conference in all four of those categories as well. Walker has scored in double digits in every game this season and averaged 24.8 points and 13 boards in the last 10 games. She had a career-high 34 points against Harding while tallying 12 double-doubles this year. She had 15 20-point games and eight games with five or more blocks. Walker is the 2008 GSC Freshman of the Year and was an all-conference selection.

Wysocky is the only other repeat All-American selection besides Leedham and Beckley. Wysocky, a senior from Michigan Tech, was a third team selection in 2009.
