UIS Approved as Active NCAA Division II Member
INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Illinois at Springfield was one of four institutions recently approved as active members of Division II and will assume full membership in the division beginning September 1.
UIS joined King College (TN), Lincoln University (PA) and Urbana University as active NCAA Division II members. The Division II Membership Committee approved the new members at its recent summer meeting in Indianapolis.
In addition, Maryville University and William Jewell College have each advanced to the next step in the reclassification process.
Maryville successfully completed Candidacy Year Two in 2008-09 and have been approved to enter the Provisional Year, the final step prior to becoming an active Division II member.
William Jewell has been approved to enter Candidacy Year Two. The institution successfully completed the first year of the three-year reclassification period and is on track to begin active membership in Division II for the 2011-12 academic year.
The three institutions are the three most recent additions to the GLVC membership which is now at 16 members strong. UIS will be eligible for GLVC Championships for the upcoming 2010-11 academic year, while Maryville and William Jewell will be eligible for conference championships in conjunciton with full active status.
All four institutions completed Division II’s provisional-member process. King, Illinois Springfield and Urbana previously were affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Lincoln reclassified from Division III.
The Membership Committee also announced that applications for membership have been accepted by the following institutions: Black Hills State University, California Baptist University, Lindenwood University, Malone University, McKendree University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Ursuline College and Walsh University. Their class also will include Lambuth University, which was held back for its first year of candidacy.
