INDIANAPOLIS – Northern Kentucky University senior midfielder Amanda Mason (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Year and Quincy junior back Sam Andert (St. Peters, Mo./St. Dominic) is the 2011 GLVC Defensive Player of the Year. Mason and Andert are joined by nine other women’s soccer players on the 2011 All-GLVC First Team.
In addition to Mason and Andert, All-GLVC First Team selections include Bellarmine’s Lauren Triplett and Abby Schuhmann, Indianapolis’ Nicole Duncan, Northern Kentucky’s Laura Painter and Allison Ponzer, Quincy’s Jodi Chapie and Megan Wingenbach, Rockhurst’s Taylor Skala and UW-Parkside’s Shannon Becker.
Mason guided Northern Kentucky to the GLVC regular season title in 201l. The Norse have posted a 15-1-1 overall mark and 12-1-1 record in league play. Mason has paced the Norse attack with a league-best 42 points and has three game-winning goals on the year. She has a league-high 15 goals and is second in the GLVC with 12 assists.
Andert helped Quincy finish fourth in the GLVC with an 11-4 league mark. The Hawks have limited opponents to just seven goals on the season, outscoring and outshooting their foes, 30-7 and 307-117, respectively. Quincy allowed the fewest number of goals in the GLVC this season and owns a 0.45 goals against average and nine shutouts in conference play.
Rockhurst’s Skala added 2011 GLVC Freshman of the Year honors to her first-team selection. Skala is third in the league with 30 points and finished second in the GLVC in goals scored with 13. She added four assists and tallied two game-winning goals to help Rockhurst to a 12-4-2 overall record and 10-3-2 mark in the GLVC.
GLVC Coach of the Year honors have been awarded to Bellarmine’s Jonathan Velotta. In his second year as the head coach of the Knights, Velotta guided Bellarmine to a second-place finish in the regular season standings with a 12-2-1 league record. Bellarmine, which owns a 14-2-2 overall mark has advanced to the semifinal round of the GLVC Women’s Soccer Tournament.
In addition to the first-team selections, the GLVC has also announced an 11-member All-GLVC Second Team and 12-member All-GLVC Third Team.
