UIndy softball ends season in NCAA Midwest Regional #2 championship

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- The Greyhound softball team closed out its 2011 season, falling in the championship game of the NCAA Midwest Regional #2, 3-1, to host Saginaw Valley State. UIndy defeated Ashland 8-0 in five innings to earn the trip to the championship.

NO. 20 UINDY 8 - ASHLAND 0 (5 INNINGS)

The Greyhounds (36-14-1) picked up right where they left off in their suspended contest with the Eagles, plating three more runs in the continued bottom of the second inning. All three runs came home on a homer to left center by Jessica Breeden.

UIndy resumed play with Jennifer DeMotte on first base and Dakota Malayer at the plate, with one out. Malayer took the first pitch she saw through the left side, putting runners on first and second. Breeden cleared the bases with her home run two batters later to put the Greyhounds up 8-0.

A combination of DeMotte and Lauren Edwards shut down the Eagles to take the win in five innings, 8-0.

Over the two-day contest, Breeden was 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs, while Jamie Keltz also had three RBIs for the Greyhounds.

SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 3 - NO. 20 UINDY 1

All four of the NCAA Midwest Regional #2 championship came via the longball. The host Cardinals were first to strike, with Monica Gathright sending a ball over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer came with two on base, putting SVSU up 3-0.

Keltz put up UIndy's lone run, on a solo homer to lead off the Greyhound sixth inning.

DeMotte (22-7) took the loss, surrendering just three hits to the Cardinals. Keltz had two of UIndy's three hits in the ballgame.

NOTES: Jamie Keltz closed out her UIndy career as the program leader in hits, homeruns, atbats, runs scored and stolen bases. Her total in RBIs is good for second all-time, while she stands in fifth on the career triples listing and sixth on the career doubles list. Her career slugging percentage is tied for fourth-best in a career all-time. Jessica Breeden finishes with the third-most atbats, runs scored, RBIs and homeruns in a UIndy career, and fourth on the career hits listing.
