INDIANAPOLIS-The Northern Kentucky women’s soccer team has once again been selected as the favorite to clinch the 2011 GLVC title as announced by the conference office on Thursday. In a vote by the League’s 16 head coaches, the Norse received 211 total points with nine first-place votes.
Northern Kentucky was also picked overall in last year’s pre-season poll. They advanced to the championship game, but fell to UW-Parkside 3-2. This year, the Norse hope to satisfy the overall selection and claim their eighth GLVC title under the leadership of head coach Bob Sheehan.
UW-Parkside, the defending GLVC champion, finished second in the voting with 200 points and five first-place votes. Quincy came in third with 188 total points and the final two first-place votes.
The Hawks were followed in the rankings by Bellarmine (187 total points), Southern Indiana (159), Drury (148), Rockhurst (138), Missouri S&T (120), Indianapolis (116), Lewis (111), Missouri-St. Louis (99), and Maryville (70). New member William Jewell came in with 55 total votes followed by UIS (51), Kentucky Wesleyan (43), and Saint Joseph’s (24).
The season will feature a round robin schedule in which each member institution will compete against every member in the League. The top eight teams will earn a berth to the GLVC Tournament with the quarterfinal rounds hosted by the top four seeds on Oct. 30. The four remaining teams will advance to semifinal and championship action on Nov. 4 & 6 respectively.
