INDIANAPOLIS – William Jewell College junior Sarah Franklin and Quincy freshman Ashley Burton, senior Sam Andert, and head coach Dave Musso have earned the major postseason honors for the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s soccer season, it was announced by the league on Friday. Franklin was voted by the league coaches as the 2012 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Andert earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades, Burton was named Freshman of the Year and Musso was recognized by his peers as Coach of the Year. In addition, 33 standouts were named to the 2012 All-Conference Teams.
Franklin becomes the first Cardinal in any sport to be honored by the conference with a major postseason award, having led Jewell to a 14-1-3 overall record, including an 11-1-3 mark in GLVC play. The Independence, Mo., native led the league in nearly every single offensive category this year, including goals (15), goals per game (0.83), game-winning goals (5), points (34), points per game (1.89), shots (87), and shots per game (4.83). Additionally, the first-team All-GLVC forward’s five game-winning goals rank 10th nationally, while her 15 goals are 11th and 34 points rate 15th.
After guiding Quincy to a 14-2-2 record and a 12-2 conference mark, Andert earns her second straight GLVC Defensive Player of the Year accolade and joins 2006 honoree Laura Gentry as the only Lady Hawks to earn the award since it was implemented seven years ago. The St. Peters, Mo., native, who was also tabbed as a first-team All-Conference defender, is also the second repeat winner of the league’s top-defensive honor as Bellarmine’s Abby Schuhmann garnered the award in 2009 and 2010. Andert anchored a QU defense this season that allowed just 12 goals on the year, good for third in the GLVC, as well as eight shutouts, which ranked fourth in the league.
Burton is the first Quincy newcomer to earn Freshman of the Year accolades since teammate Jodi Chapie was recognized by the league in 2010. The first-team All-Conference midfielder is also the third Lady Hawk to win the conference’s rookie award as Becky Fleming was the first QU freshman to accomplish the feat in 2006. The St. Louis, Mo., native made an immediate impact this season, rating second in the conference in goals (13), goals per game (0.72), game-winning goals (5), points (30), points per game (1.67), and fourth in shots (57).
Musso takes home his second Coach of the Year honor after earning his first following the 2006 season, which marked his inaugural season at the helm of the Lady Hawks. That year Quincy posted a school-record 16 wins and Musso has since guided his Lady Hawks to a 100-36-11 record over seven seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of the last six years.
In addition to Franklin, Andert and Burton, the GLVC honored 30 other standouts on three All-Conference teams. Quincy and Bellarmine led all schools with six All-GLVC selections each, followed by Rockhurst (5) and William Jewell (4).
Joining Franklin, Andert and Burton on the first team are Bellarmine’s Jessie York (B) and Amy Kunowski (GK), Indianapolis’ Shelby Spinelli (MF), Quincy’s Brittany Casey (F), Rockhurst’s Taylor Skala (F), UW-Parkside’s Lauki’l Cheng (B), and William Jewell’s Ashley Licata (F) and Kate Beaver (MF).
