GLVC member Truman State's fall sports performance for November

Getting to Know the Truman State University Bulldogs

This past June, Truman State University (Mo.) was introduced as the newest member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) after the league’s Council of Presidents voted unanimously to accept the Truman Bulldogs into the conference. The Bulldogs will begin play in the GLVC in all sports beginning in the fall of 2013, competing as the league’s 16th member.

Throughout the 2012-13 season, GLVCsports.com will highlight the performances of each in-season Bulldog team from the previous month as Truman concludes play in its final year in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

FOOTBALL
The Truman Football season ended the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 4-7 and 3-7 in MIAA play. Ten members of the team were named to the All-MIAA team. Senior defensive back Richie Schumacher was selected as a first-team selection, while junior wide receiver Dallas Grier, senior defensive end Patrick Blackwell, and senior punter Eric Phillips were second-team choices. In addition, four seniors were selected to the honorable mention list, including center Blake Holland, defensive backs Michael Elliott, Tremaine Millender, and Robert Gayden.  Two juniors were also named in defensive lineman Jeramey Dockery and kicker Derek Koon.  Schumacher was also named to the All-Region Team for his efforts. 

VOLLEYBALL
The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 27-7 overall and 15-3 in MIAA play. The team lost during the MIAA Quarterfinals to Emporia State in a 3-1 decision. The Bulldogs landed seven of their players on the All-MIAA Team. Senior middle Megan Sharpe and sophomore outside Allie Brak were chosen on the first team, while teammate Abby Heise was named Freshman of the Year and received a third-team honor.  Second team honors went to sophomore setter Meghan Zimmerman, while honorable mention picks were senior middle Emily Briseno, sophomore libero Abby Moser, and freshman outside Ali Patterson. The seven selections mentioned were the most of any MIAA program this season. While their MIAA Championships ended early, the Bulldogs received the seventh seed in the Central Region of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Truman dropped a 3-0 match to the No. 2 seed Southwest Minnesota State to draw the 2012 season to a close. Awards for the Bulldogs continued as Sharpe and Brak were selected to the Daktronics Central Region second team, and Sharpe earned her fourth All-American award with an honorable mention selection.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s basketball team opened its first five-game stretch of the 2012-13 season with a record of 2-3.  One of these losses was a close game to the GLVC’s own Quincy by a score of 60-62.  As a team, the Bulldogs are outscoring their opponents 378-321, averaging about 75.6 per game. The team is led by junior Mike Carlson averaging 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. Boasting a .491 field goal percentage and .375 from behind the arc, Carlson is topping the Truman leaderboard in multiple categories. Teammates Isaac Garner and Marek Bush are also leading the Bullldogs in three-pointers and rebounds, respectively. The team will travel back to Quincy to play in the QU Holiday Tournament in December, as well as host Maryville to end the year. 
 
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s basketball team is off to a great start winning their first five games, with wins over the GLVC’s Quincy and Rockhurst.  The team holds a field-goal percentage of .489 and .427 from behind the arc.  Led by senior Becka McHenry, sophomore Allie Norton, and junior Nicole Gloor, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by over 100 points, 378-272, and moved towards the top of the MIAA standings. McHenry is leading the scoring with 13.2 points per game. Norton is the threat from behind the arc with an average of .440, and Gloor is boasting a .512 field goal percentage. The Bulldogs will begin their final season in the MIAA in January.

MEN’S SWIMMING
The Men’s Swimming team is currently ranked 19th in the top-25 rankings. After dropping a meet to the GLVC’s Missouri S&T, the team traveled to the University of Chicago where it placed third behind the host school and Southern Illinois. The team is led by Jerod Simek, who placed first at the meet in the 1650 Free (15:44.69). Simek and Levi Hanks also finished 1-2 in the men’s 500 Free for the Bulldogs. The team is off until a December 18th meet against the GLVC’s William Jewell.
 
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
The No. 7 women’s Bulldog swimming team won the University of Chicago Meet with a come from behind victory. Brynn Guardado led the women in the 1650 Free (17:25.72). The women’s 400 Medley Relay team of Beth Eyanson, Abby Hempen, Adrian Rudd, and Casey Jepsen were able to hold off Division I Southern Illinois with a time of 3:53.74, leaving a difference of three seconds between the two teams. The team will be idle until the December 18th meet against future conference foe William Jewell.
 
TRACK & FIELD
The Bulldog seasons will begin on Dec. 7 at the Cyclone Holiday Preview hosted by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete in the invitational before traveling back to Ames for the Iowa State Open on Jan. 18.
