INDIANAPOLIS – The 2012 All-GLVC women’s basketball teams and individual award winners were announced today by the Great Lakes Valley Conference office. Northern Kentucky senior guard Casse Mogan was named the GLVC Player of the Year, while Maryville guard Shelby Miller was tabbed the Freshman of the Year and UW-Parkside mentor Jenny Knight-Kenesie was selected the Chuck Mallander Coach of the Year. In addition, 11 student-athletes each made up the GLVC first and second All-Conference teams, while another 13 were featured on the league’s inaugural All-Defensive team due to ties.
Mogan, one of five unanimous first-team All-Conference picks, finished the regular season ranked third in the conference in scoring (17.4 ppg), eighth in field-goal percentage (.505), and 12th in assists (2.96 apg), while helping the Norse to a second-place finish in the GLVC East Division with a 14-4 record. The Circleville, Ohio, native also garnered her third straight first-team All-GLVC honor, having been selected as one of the conference’s top players in both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Mogan, who was also named to the GLVC All-Defensive squad, has been a model of consistency for the Norse this year. She scored in double figures in all but two of NKU’s 26 games, including the last eight games, and twice netted games over 30 points. Mogan’s selection marks NKU’s first GLVC Player of the Year award winner since Michelle Cottrell following the 2001-02 campaign.
Miller earns the first-ever major GLVC postseason honor for Maryville as the impressive newcomer ranked 16th in the conference with 12.4 points per game and 11th in steals with 1.85 dishes each time out. The Elizabeth, Ind., native also ranked 13th in the league with 1.56 3-point field goals made per outing. Miller helped guide the Saints to a 16-11 overall record and an 11-6 mark in GLVC action during her first year on campus.
Having captured the outright GLVC East Division title last week, Knight-Kenesie was honored by her peers as the league’s top coach for the first time in her 10-year career at UWP. She led the Rangers to a 15-3 record in the GLVC East and a 22-4 mark overall, while helping mentor 2011-12 unanimous first-team All-GLVC selections Brittany Beyer and Jadee Rooney and second-team pick Amy Selk. The Rangers topped the conference in the regular season in scoring margin (+12.3), assists (16.08 apg), assists-to-turnover ratio (1.24), field-goal percentage (.449), 3-point field-goal percentage (.386), and 3-point field-goal percentage defense (.243).
In addition to Mogan and Parkside’s Beyer and Rooney, Indianapolis’ Kristin Turner and Quincy’s Ali Schwagmeyer were unanimous selections to the first-team All-Conference squad, which fielded 11 players instead of 10 due to a tie. A tie also expanded the All-GLVC second-team list, as did a four-way tie for the last spot on the All-Defensive team, which brought the total to 13 defenders on the initial list.
