The 2011-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s indoor track and field season came to a close this past weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Mankato, Minn., where several GLVC teams and student-athletes turned in solid performances. The University of Indianapolis was the conference’s top finisher, placing eighth overall with 27 points. Led by six All-American finishes, the Greyhounds’ Ryan Smith took home two fifth-place awards in the shot put and weight throw, while Robert Gardner (5th place-400m) Matt Royer (2nd, weight throw), Jerel Flournoy (4th, long jump) and Joshua Bass (7th, long jump) also earned the prestigious honor.
Bellarmine pole vaulter Bryan Gennett ended the indoor season on a good note as he became the school’s first-ever All-American in men’s indoor track and field when he finished third after clearing 5.0 meters (16 feet, 4 ¾ inches). The Knights finished 28th overall at the championships with six points.
With his seventh-place honor in the shot put, Kaleb Thompson scored two points for St. Joseph’s, good for 36th overall.
Grand Canyon earned the national championship with a team score of 54.
Two other schools had representation at the national level as Ben Orvold of UW-Parkside took ninth in the 5,000m with a time of 14:44.43 and Dan Hellwig of Missouri S&T finished sixth in the pole vault after clearing 5.0 meters.
Prior to the NCAA Championships, 16 conference standouts earned 22 All-Midwest Region distinctions, led by Indianapolis’ Flournoy and Gardner with three honors each. A complete list of All-Region honorees can be found below.
