INDIANAPOLIS – McKendree University freshman forward Alyssa Reiniger and University of Wisconsin-Parkside freshman goalkeeper Mallory Geurts have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Reiniger helped McKendree to a 1-0-1 record last week against Lewis and UW-Parkside – two teams ranked ahead of the Bearcats in the top tier of the GLVC standings. On Sunday, she netted both goals in McKendree’s 2-0 victory against Lewis, after providing offensive support against the Rangers on Friday. In the UWP contest, McKendree was outshot 7-1 in the first half, but Reiniger was lauded for bringing the Bearcats back on the offensive attack in the second half to hold an 11-9 advantage over the remainder of the game. This is the Maryville, Ill., native’s first career weekly award and just the second ever for a McKendree player as Maggie Dudas was named GLVC Player of the Week nearly one year ago on Oct. 8, 2012.
Geurts tallied a pair of overtime shutouts over the weekend, helping the Rangers finish their GLVC road swing unbeaten at 1-0-1. The Green Bay, Wis., native tallied six saves in a double-overtime scoreless stalemate against McKendree on Friday before turning away eight shots in a 1-0 overtime win over host Bellarmine on Sunday. She finished the week with 14 saves in 201 minutes of work. In 10 starts this season, Geurts has posted five shutouts. This is the second weekly honor of her career as she was also honored after the opening weekend this year on Sept. 9.
