INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University senior forward Jaclyn Mastroianni, senior goalkeeper Jodi Chapie and head coach Dave Musso, along with Bellarmine University freshman forward Mary Beth Gorham have earned major postseason honors for the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s soccer season, it was announced by the league office Thursday evening. Mastroianni was voted by the league coaches as GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, teammate Chapie was picked as the Defensive Player of the Year, while Musso garnered Coach of the Year accolades. Bellarmine’s Gorham was tabbed as Freshman of the Year. In addition, a total of 33 standouts were named to the 2013 All-Conference Teams. The annual awards were presented Thursday at a reception on the eve of the 2013 GLVC Championship Tournament.
Mastroianni earned the league’s top offensive honor after registering a conference-high 26 points and 10 assists in 15 GLVC games while also ranking tied for second with eight goals scored. The Lady Hawks netted 23 total goals in the conference season this year and Mastroianni had a part in 18 of them, which included three game-winners. She earned back-to-back GLVC Offensive Player of the Week awards on Sept. 16 and 23, while garnering Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week honors on Sept. 24. The St. Louis, Mo., native is the first Lady Hawk standout to earn Offensive Player of the Year distinction since Jenna Boyko was recognized by the conference in 2009. Mastroianni’s honor is the fourth in the history of the Quincy program as in addition to Boyko, Becky Fleming won two-straight Offensive Player of the Year awards in 2006 and 2007.
Chapie, who began her career at Quincy with the GLVC Freshman of the Year honor in 2010, concludes her career as the league’s top defensive standout. In just over 1,300 minutes played in 15 conference games this year, Chapie allowed just five goals for a 0.35 goals-against average while also boasting a .886 save percentage that ranked first in the conference among players that participated in more than half of the league slate. The St. Louis, Mo., native also registered 10 shutouts in 15 conference contests, and added three additional shutouts in her 19 overall games this season. Chapie’s honor makes it three straight for Quincy as Sam Andert was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. Laura Gentry was the only other Quincy defender to be honored with the award, having claimed the inaugural honor following the 2006 season.
Over the course of the conference’s 15-game slate, Gorham registered league highs with 11 goals on 83 shots, while also rating second with 25 points and tying for sixth with three assists. Four of her 11 conference goals were game-winners, which helped Bellarmine achieve a 10-4-1 record in GLVC action and the No. 5 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament. Shortly after the Knights were knocked out of the postseason tournament by fourth-seeded Rockhurst, Gorham was recognized by the league as the final GLVC Offensive Player of the Week of the 2013 season. The Nicholasville, Ky., native, who was also named first-team All-GLVC, is just the second Freshman of the Year in program history as Sarah Barton was the first when she shared the award with UW-Parkside’s Erica Kollatz in 2002.
Musso earns his second consecutive GLVC Coach of the Year honor after guiding his Lady Hawks to the outright GLVC Regular-Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in this week’s GLVC Championship Tournament. Quincy, currently ranked eighth nationally, is unbeaten on the season at 15-0-4 overall and 12-0-3 in conference play. In addition to first-team All-GLVC selections Mastroianni and Chapie, Musso mentored midfielder Ashley Burton – last year’s GLVC Freshman of the Year – and defender Taylor Lindwedel to first-team accolades, as well as second-team pick Kristine Vogt at the midfield position. Musso is the only coach in Quincy women’s soccer history to earn GLVC Coach of the Year and he has now done it on three occasions beginning with the 2006 campaign.
Twenty-seven other women’s soccer stars earned recognition from the GLVC coaches, as three 11-member All-Conference teams were also released on Thursday.
Of the 33 All-Conference selections, league newcomer Truman State led the way with seven representatives, including first-team forward Trisha Shoemaker. Quincy followed with five All-Conference nods, four of which were a league high for first-team picks. UW-Parkside and Bellarmine followed with four honorees each, although the Knights boasted three on the All-GLVC First Team, including Gorham, midfielder Lauren Boyd, and defender Jessie York. In addition to the previously named first-team All-GLVC recipients, Rockhurst back Kasey Lierz and William Jewell forward Sarah Franklin and midfielder Ashley Licata were also picked among the 11 best players as viewed by the coaches.
