Day 1 Results | Day 1 Team Standings
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis closed out day one of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in first place on both the men’s and women’s side, setting up a showdown on Saturday before a home crowd at the Athletics & Recreation Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Greyhounds’ men’s team, which is the three-time defending GLVC Champion, earned a league-best 64 points on the day, followed by Missouri S&T (56), Bellarmine (32), Lewis (26), Southern Indiana (25), Saint Joseph’s (10), William Jewell (10), McKendree (5), UW-Parkside (4) and Maryville (2).
Indianapolis will be vying for its fourth-straight GLVC title on Saturday, which would put the Greyhounds one conference crown shy of the league record of five, set by Lewis.
A handful of events went final on Friday, including the men’s 5,000 meters, which was captured by Lewis’ Andrew McLain in a GLVC-record shattering 14:25.65. McLain bested Southern Indiana’s Johnnie Guy (14:28.89), who also broke the previous conference record of 14:39.09, set by USI’s Dustin Emerick in 2012.
Missouri S&T impressed in the men’s pole vault Friday, taking four of the top-five spots, including the first two, paced by Ryan McGuire (4.96m). Teammate Mike Grinde (4.78m) was second, UIndy’s Jacob Aldrich (4.63m) was third, and the Miners’ Cody Durand (4.48m) and David Jones-Richardson (4.33m) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
UIndy’s Ryan Smith earned the weight throw title as the Greyhound senior unleashed a toss of 19.64 meters, which is the fourth-highest mark in NCAA Division II this season. Smith was followed in second by teammate Tim Lovejoy (17.24m).
A pair of Greyhounds went 1-2 in the long jump as Joshuah Bass was awarded the crown over teammate Jerel Flournoy, after both them touch down at 7.35 meters.
Bellarmine swept both the men’s and women’s Distance Medley Relay events, with the men crossing the line in a GLVC-record time of 10:03.17, while the women broke the tape in 12:06.99. The Knights’ men’s team improved on its own conference record, which it set last year in a time of 10:11.09.
On the women’s side, UIndy leads the way with 37 points followed by Lewis (32), 2012 GLVC Champion Bellarmine (24), William Jewell (19), Missouri S&T (19), Southern Indiana (16), Drury (14), UW-Parkside (11), Saint Joseph’s (10), McKendree (8) and Maryville (5).
Prior to Bellarmine’s title in 2012, UIndy earned its first and only crown in 2009 and Lewis earned back-to-back conference championships in 2010 and 2011.
On the day, Drury’s Erin Dolan captured the GLVC title in the 5,000 meters with a winning time of 17:21.38, placing ahead of Southern Indiana’s Erika Wilson (17:22.68) and Bellarmine’s Emily Frith (17:24.95).
In the weight throw, William Jewell’s Sarah Stadnik launched a winning heave of 16.77 meters, which gave her the conference title over McKendree’s Kristin Wykoff (16.10m).
Indianapolis’ Valorie Parker earned the GLVC title in the long jump with a leap of 5.64 meters, besting Lewis’ Kayla King (5.56m) for the title.
Missouri S&T's Mary Ann Bradshaw earned a slim two-point victory over Saint Joseph's Samantha Nirva in the pentathlon, and broke her own school record in the process with a final total of 3,224 points.
The rest of day one included preliminary heats of both hurdle races, the men's and women's 60-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and multi-events.
Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. ET from the UIndy ARC.
