INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis and Bellarmine University successfully defended their respective men’s and women’s titles at the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s & Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships, which concluded Saturday at the Athletics & Recreation Center on the UIndy campus in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Greyhounds earned what is now officially the first time a conference team has earned four consecutive GLVC men’s crowns.  Lewis’ four straight titles from 2000-03 were later vacated in the conference records book.

For Bellarmine, the Knights are the first GLVC team to win back-to-back women’s titles since Lewis captured the 2010 and 2011 crowns.

The UIndy men earned 200 points for the weekend, which was the most since it captured 207 markers en route to the 2011 title.  After winning by 95 points over Missouri S&T last year, the Greyhounds bested the runner-up Miners (98) by 102 points this season.  The 102-point margin of victory is the largest in conference history since Lewis beat UIndy by 121 points (230-109) in 2001 – a championship and margin of victory that was later vacated.

Southern Indiana placed third on Saturday with 72 points, edging out Lewis (71) and Bellarmine (69.5) in the top five.  McKendree (48), Saint Joseph’s (46), UW-Parkside (28), William Jewell (18), Maryville (5.5) and Drury (5) rounded out the field.

On the women’s side, Bellarmine (156) bested host Indianapolis (141) by 15 points, which marked the third straight year the conference has been decided by 15 points or less.  Lewis earned third place with 96.5 points, followed by Missouri S&T (64), William Jewell (43), Drury (36), and UW-Parkside (34.5).  Saint Joseph’s (32.5), Southern Indiana (24), McKendree (23.5) and Maryville (12) rounded out the field.

Bellarmine swept the major postseason honors on the women’s side.  Angela Musk, who was also the 2012 GLVC Cross Country Champion and Runner of the Year, was named GLVC Track Athlete of the Year, while teammate Meghan Jones was tabbed the Field Athlete of the Year.  Musk’s honor is the second for a Knight as Carissa Martin earned the award in 2012.  Jones is the first Bellarmine field athlete to win the conference’s top award.  Prior to 2010, the GLVC awarded just one Athlete of the Year honor, which Bellarmine’s Megan Crowe earned in 2006.  Kaysee O’Bannon was named GLVC Freshman of the Year, marking the first time a Knight has been honored with the conference’s newcomer award.  Jim Vargo was selected by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year – his second-straight honor in the indoor season.

On the men’s side, UIndy’s Robert Gardner III and Ryan Smith were named the GLVC Track and Field Athlete of the Year, respectively, while Greyhound mentor Scott Fangman was tabbed as Coach of the Year.  Southern Indiana newcomer Johnnie Guy was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Gardner’s feat continues the streak of four-straight UIndy representatives named Track Athlete of the Year since the award was implemented in 2010.  Gardner also earned the second top award of his career as he was also the conference’s Track Athlete of the Year in 2011.  Smith is the second-straight Greyhound thrower to be named Field Athlete of the Year as Matt Royer was honored with the accolade in 2012.  Fangman has now been voted Coach of the Year the past four seasons.  USI’s Guy is the first rookie Screaming Eagle to take the conference’s top newcomer award since Dustin Emerick in 2009.  It is the fourth GLVC Freshman of the Year award in USI history, as David Goodman was honored in 2008 and David Farmer was recognized in 2000.

Eight new GLVC records were set Saturday night, including four at the 60-meter distance, which was a new event this season replacing both the sprints and hurdles at 55 meters.  Jordan Henderson claimed the 60-meter sprint in 6.75, while UIndy’s Jermel Kindred crossed the line first in 8.23 in the 60-meter hurdles.  On the women’s side, Lewis Kamille Ferguson sprinted to a 7.79 in the 60 meters, while UIndy’s Camille Edwards went 8.80 in the 60-meter hurdles.  Additionally, UW-Parkside’s Jessica Watychowicz captured the 3,000 meters in 9:48.78, which bested the previous mark of Southern Indiana’s Allison Shafer (10:02.38) in 2007.  William Jewell’s Jessica Borey reached 3.57 meters in the pole vault, eclipsing the previous GLVC record of 3.56 meters by Missouri S&T’s Taylor Hahn in 2008.  Bellarmine’s Ben Kolb set a new conference mark in the heptathlon with 5,040 points, shattering the previous record of 4,827 set last year by William Jewell’s Logan Pettz.  In the shot put, UIndy’s Ryan Smith posted a league-high 17.47 launch, which improved on the previous mark of 17.19m set by Saint Joseph’s Kaleb Thompson at the 2012 indoor meet.

First-team and second-team All-Conference honors were awarded to each event’s first- and second-place finisher, respectively.  A complete list of honorees can be found in the link above.
