COLUMBUS, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis captured the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship Tuesday afternoon following a 4-1 victory over Lewis University in the finals of match-play competition at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.  The third-seeded Greyhounds, who advanced to the finals following a 4-1 win over No. 2 Bellarmine University in Tuesday morning’s semifinal, earned their GLVC-record 14th conference title and the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships.

No. 4 seed Lewis, the owner of six conference golf crowns, upset top-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis in semifinal action by a score of 3-2.

In the championship match, No. 5 player Jon Jozefowski got the Greyhounds on the board first, turning in an even-par 72 to earn one point over Lewis’ Anthony Lodovico, who carded a 76.  At the No. 4 spot, the Flyers squared the match as Brandon White’s 74 topped Seve Duncan’s round of 77.  UIndy would then roll in the next three matches as No. 3 Max Bowling recorded only the second sub-par round of 71 on the day (Bellarmine’s Bryan Ratterman) to beat Lewis’ Robert Dofflemyer and his 74.

It was fitting that senior Tobin Dunigan, the reigning GLVC Golfer of the Month, closed out the match and secured the championship for UIndy as his 73 at the No. 2 position bested Alex Thode’s 75, giving the Hounds the 3-1 advantage and putting the title out of reach for the Flyers.

David Frank, who fell in what turned out to be the tightest matchup of the day, losing 71-72 to Bellarmine’s Ratterman in the semifinal, responded with a win in the finals, besting Lewis’ Harrison Carmichael, 75-79.

Despite the morning upsets in semifinal action, it seemed fitting that UIndy and Lewis advanced to the GLVC Championships as the two programs have secured 19 of the 35 GLVC Championships awarded since 1978.  The Greyhounds’ 14th men’s golf title is eight more than the Flyers and 2012 Champion and now Division I member Northern Kentucky own in their respective programs, and is now tied for the second-most titles in any sport in GLVC history.  Kentucky Wesleyan has earned 14 conference championships in men’s basketball, while Southern Indiana owns the overall conference mark with 20 men’s cross country titles.

By securing the GLVC's automatic qualifier, UIndy will prepare for its next event as the NCAA DII Midwest/Central Super Regional will be held at The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wis., May 6-8.  The remaining conference teams will learn Friday, April 26, if their respective programs will be among the 20 teams competing in regional action.
