WATERLOO, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis captured the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship Sunday following a 36-hole total of 606 (301-305), 19 strokes better than runner-up Missouri-St. Louis (308-317—625), at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill. The title is the Greyhounds’ second straight championship and GLVC-record seventh conference crown.
UIndy sophomore Regan Pittard became just the third Greyhound to ever win GLVC Championship medalist honors, carding a 36-hole total of 145 – the fifth-lowest 36-hole winning score in conference history. Pittard was the lone competitor in the field of 69 players to card a sub-par round as her 1-under-par 71 Saturday coupled with a 2-over 74 Sunday for her winning total at 1-over.
In addition, Indianapolis junior Jenny Konop was named the 2013 GLVC Player of the Year, while teammate Molly Ward was tabbed as the conference’s Freshman of the Year. Greyhound mentor Brent Nicoson was selected by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year.
UIndy’s margin of victory was the largest at the conference championship since the Greyhounds topped Drury by 22 strokes en route to their 2009 championship.
Southern Indiana (319-317—636) placed third overall, followed by Drury (316-332-648) in fourth and Maryville (333-329—662) and Rockhurst (330-332—662) tied for fifth. Bellarmine (333-330-663) was seventh, while Illinois Springfield (332-335—667), Lewis (333-339-672) and William Jewell (350-335—685) finished in the top 10. Rounding out the 14-team field was McKendree (347-348—695), Saint Joseph’s (360-358—718), Quincy (375-373—748) and Kentucky Wesleyan (410-397—807).
Missouri-St. Louis freshman Tayler Hoag finished second in the individual race with a 4-over 148 (72-76), followed by UIndy’s Chanice Young (75-75—150), Southern Indiana’s Anastasia Carter (74-79—153), and UMSL’s Shweta Galande (75-80—155) in the top five. All top-five finishers earned All-GLVC distinction along with UIndy’s Konop, Jaclyn Schindler and Amy Thompson, Illinois Springfield’s Abby Vorreyer, and Drury’s Meg Alumno, who garnered All-Conference accolades based on their Golfstat head-to-head rankings and participation in the conference championship.
UIndy’s Konop became the Greyhounds’ fifth GLVC Player of the Year honoree and the first recipient since a three-peat that included consecutive honors by Kristi Piepenbrink in 2008 and 2009 and Lyndsay McBride in 2010. The Hounds’ other honoree was Amy Wenning, who earned the league’s top award in 2002.
Ward is UIndy’s fifth GLVC Freshman of the Year in conference history and is the second straight Hound to earn the league’s newcomer award as teammate Schindler was honored in 2012. The UIndy tandem joins Sarah Prascsak (2007), Piepenbrink (2006) and Courtney Tate (2000) as past honorees of the conference’s rookie award.
Nicoson earned his second straight GLVC Coach of the Year honor, which also marked UIndy’s third consecutive award as former coach Ken Piepenbrink shared the hardware with Southern Indiana’s Don Bisesi in 2011. It’s the sixth conference coaching accolade for the UIndy program as Larry Bledsoe was tabbed in 2000, 2001 and 2002 as GLVC Coach of the Year.
There is no automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships in women’s golf, so a number of GLVC squads will await announcement of the final regional rankings. Only nine teams will qualify for the 2013 DII East Regional, held at Joliet Country Club in Joliet, Ill., May 5-7. From there, the top-three teams and top-three student-athletes not with a qualifying team will move on to the NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 15-18.
Indianapolis currently sits atop the latest NCAA East Regional rankings, released by the NCAA on April 25, while Missouri-St. Louis is sixth, Drury is eighth, Southern Indiana is ninth, and Lewis is 11th.
