INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis has earned its second-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy, the conference office announced Monday. The Greyhounds totaled 167.5 year-end points for the 2012-13 academic year, which coincidently was their winning total from last year. UIndy earned its fourth All-Sports Trophy in program history by a slim 1.5 points over Lewis University.
The Greyhounds have now captured the GLVC All-Sports Trophy in the 1994-95, 2002-03, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons.
The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league’s 18 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in the respective sport’s conference tournament.
Led by Dr. Sue Willey, the school’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Indianapolis earned six GLVC Championships this season, one year after taking home a school-record seven conference crowns. By virtue of its six titles, UIndy collected first-place points in football, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf. Results from the indoor and outdoor seasons were averaged to create one point total for both men’s and women’s track and field.
Additionally, the Hounds also posted strong finishes in women’s cross country, softball, tennis, and volleyball for third-place points, as well as fourth-place markers in cross country and tennis on the men’s side.
Winners of a GLVC-record 13 All-Sports Trophies, Lewis finished a close runner-up this season with 166.0 points. Bellarmine (153.5) claimed its second-straight third-place finish, thanks in large part to the Knights claiming the GLVC Baseball Championship on Sunday. Southern Indiana (152.0) finished fourth, while Drury (136.3), Missouri-St. Louis (118.0), William Jewell (103.5) and Quincy (100.5) finished in the top-half of the conference. Rounding out the second half of the league was Rockhurst (97.0), UW-Parkside (92.5), Missouri S&T (88.0), and Maryville (96.3) in ninth through 12th, respectively, followed by McKendree (76.5), Saint Joseph’s (75.5), Illinois Springfield (43.5) and Kentucky Wesleyan (42.0).
The All-Sports Trophy was first instituted in the GLVC during the 1981-82 season and seven different institutions have claimed the award.
