INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Tuesday that exactly 100 men’s and women’s teams have been named recipients of the 2012-13 Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year.  In the past two seasons, the GLVC has boasted record numbers as the recipient total has increased by 15 honorees each year.  This season’s total of 100 shatters the former conference record of 85 set last year, which had previously bested the mark of 70 recipients from 2010-11.

The McKendree University men’s and women’s tennis squads both posted the highest team GPA during the 2012-13 academic year with a 3.77.  Drury University’s women’s tennis program followed at 3.75, while the William Jewell College women’s basketball team turned in the third-best GPA at 3.73.

Maryville University and Rockhurst University led all institutions with the most teams honored as each institution had a conference-record 10 clubs on the Team Academic All-GLVC list, which marks the fourth-straight season a GLVC member has boasted 10 members on the list.  It is also just the second time that two teams have been represented by 10 teams as Drury and Maryville each reached double-digits in 2009-10.  Maryville was the conference’s sole 10-team school in 2010-11, while Drury garnered 10 distinctions in 2011-12.

In fact, outside the four aforementioned 10-team honorees above, no school has ever been represented by nine teams since the award’s inception in 2010.  The 2012-13 Team Academic All-GLVC list boasts three schools that each had nine sports meet the criteria, including McKendree, Drury and Lewis University.

There were a total of 82 women’s teams and 18 men’s squads tabbed for the honor, which marks a respective increase of 10 and five for each gender from a year ago.  On the women’s side, soccer led the way with 12 of the league’s 16 teams earning the accolade, while the remaining seven sports were each represented by more than half of the conference contingent:  tennis (11), volleyball (11), basketball (10), golf (10), softball (10), cross country (9), and track and field (9).

The sport of tennis led the men’s honorees for the third-straight season with six of the 14 conference squads garnering the award. There were five soccer squads, three golf and cross country programs each, and one baseball team representing the men on the Team Academic All-GLVC list.

Women’s cross country and women’s tennis were also the sports most commonly found atop each school’s list.  Four GLVC members saw its highest team GPA come from women’s cross country while four other conference institutions were paced by their women’s tennis teams.  The remaining eight schools were led by women’s golf (3), women’s basketball (2), women’s soccer (2) and softball (1).  McKendree’s men’s tennis team tied the Bearcats’ women’s tennis squad for the highest GPA, while Quincy University’s men’s soccer team also tied for first with the Lady Hawks’ softball program.
