INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University sophomore Mariyah Brawner-Henley has been named the 2013-14 Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s basketball Player of the Year, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.  Rockhurst University newcomer Mary Dineen was tabbed as the league’s Freshman of the Year, while Drury University first-year mentor Steve Huber was honored by her peers as the Chuck Mallander Coach of the Year.  In addition, 20 student-athletes were honored as All-Conference honorees, while 11 representatives were named to the conference’s All-Defensive Team due to a tie.

Brawner-Henley, who was twice named GLVC Player of the Week this year, wrapped up the regular season leading the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg) and rebounds (12.4 rpg). She paces the nation with 22 double-doubles in 26 contests this season while sitting in third in the country on the boards.  The Skokie, Ill., native posted a career-high 31 points against Purdue Calumet on Dec. 7 and pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds against Indianapolis on Jan. 30.  Brawner-Henley is the fourth Flyer to have ever earned the league’s top honor in the sport, joining Julie Fruendt (co-1984), Mary Moskal (2006) and Darcee Schmidt (2007).

Dineen was honored by the coaches as the league’s top freshman this season, after playing an integral role in guiding the Hawks to their first-ever appearance in the GLVC Championship Tournament .  She was the lone freshman ranked among the conference’s top 30 scorers this season, averaging an 11th-best 14.7 points per outing.  The newcomer from Omaha, Neb., also showed a steady hand at the line this season.  She ranked eighth in the league with an .867 free-throw percentage and was 15th overall with 1.8 3-point field goals made each time out.  Dineen is the first Rockhurst rookie to ever be honored as GLVC Freshman of the Year.

Another newcomer was also recognized by the league coaches this season.  First-year Drury head coach Steve Huber garnered his first Chuck Mallander Coach of the Year award and the second overall in program history as former Lady Panther coach and current Saint Joseph’s mentor Steve Harold was honored in 2008.  Huber has guided his Drury ballclub to a 24-2 overall record, including a 16-2 mark in conference play.  That effort earned the program its second official GLVC West Division Championship and the No. 1 overall seed in this week’s Deaconess GLVC Basketball Tournament Championship.  Huber had the help of star player Amber Dvorak, who was voted by the coaches as a unanimous first-team All-GLVC selection, and was picked to the All-Defensive Team as well.  Teammate Bethanie Funderburk was selected to the All-GLVC Second Team.

Dvorak was one of three unanimous picks to the first-team All-Conference squad, joining University of Indianapolis senior guard Katy McIntosh and University of Southern Indiana junior post player Anna Hackert.  McIntosh averaged 17.3 points in 21 games this season before suffering a season-ending injury, while Hackert ranked right behind Brawner-Henley as the league’s second-best scorer (18.3 ppg) and rebounder (9.5).  She was also an All-Defensive Team selection.

In addition to Brawner-Henley, Dvorak, McIntosh and Hackert, six other players were named as first-team All-GLVC, which was divided equally to include five members from both the East and West Divisions.  Ten members were also named All-GLVC second-team list.
