INDIANAPOLIS – The 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship is set to tee off Sunday as the 36th annual event will be held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., April 20-22.

The 2014 event will mark the 19th year the GLVC Championship will be played at Otter Creek Golf Course, which will be played on the North and West courses at a par of 72 and 6,897 yards.

The GLVC Championship features a 54-hole stroke play event with the top four teams following stroke play competing in medal/match play to determine the conference champion. A total of 36 holes are played on Sunday, April 20, followed by 18 holes on Monday, April 21. The semifinals and finals of match play will take place on Tuesday, April 22.

Indianapolis is back to defend its GLVC Championship and enters the tournament seeded sixth overall in the Midwest Region and second among conference squads.  Missouri-St. Louis is the top-ranked GLVC team and second in the region.  Lewis is the third-seeded conference team and seventh overall in the Midwest.

Indianapolis has captured 14 GLVC Championships, followed by Lewis and Northern Kentucky with six each and Bellarmine with five. Southern Indiana, UW-Parkside and former league-member Ashland have all claimed the GLVC Championship once.

Last season, Indianapolis won the conference crown at Otter Creek following a 4-1 match-play victory over Lewis. The third-seeded Greyhounds, who advanced to the finals following a 4-1 win over No. 2 Bellarmine in the morning semifinal, earned the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships with the victory.

No. 4 seed Lewis, the owner of six conference golf crowns, upset top-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis in semifinal action by a score of 3-2.

The top five finishers at the GLVC Men's Golf Championship are named All-GLVC and the top finishing individual after 54-hole medal play earns medalist honors. The remaining golf awards, including All-Conference positions Nos. 6-10, as well as GLVC Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year, are named following the spring season.

UMSL's Joe Atkisson was crowned the 2013 GLVC Medalist following a one-hole, sudden-death playoff against Rockhurst University’s Tanner Bulejski.  Atkisson (70-73-71) and Bulejski (72-72-70), both of whom return for the 2014 event, did not disappoint as they each carded a 2-under-par 214 – the only 54-hole rounds under par.  Bulejski has finished in the top five in each of the last two championships.

Atkission’s teammate, Warren Crow, is fresh off an individual title earlier in the week at the Midwest Regional #4 played at nearby Purgatory Golf Club just north of Indianapolis.  Other individual notables include the reigning GLVC Player of the Month for March, Marvyille’s Jack McKinney, 2013 GLVC Freshman of the Year Nick Arman of Rockhurst, and UIndy’s Max Bowling, who shined last year with a 2-0 mark in match play following a 36-hole total of 1-under 143.
