WATERLOO, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis captured its third consecutive and league-best eighth conference crown at the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship, which concluded Sunday at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Ill.

The Greyhounds carded a 314 on Sunday to finish the 36-hole event at 618, nine strokes better than runner-up University of Southern Indiana (317-310—627) and third-place finisher Drury University (313-325—638).  The University of Missouri-St. Louis (328-318—646) and University of Illinois Springfield (326-323—649) closed out the top five, while Lewis University (320-333-653), Maryville University (325-332—657), Bellarmine University (332-330—662), Rockhurst University (342-338—680) and McKendree University (341-340—681) rounded out the top 10.  Quincy University (348-345—693) was 11th overall, Saint Joseph’s College (357-350—707) and William Jewell College (356-351—707) tied for 12th, and Truman State University (368-361—729) followed in the 14-team field.

The team win was another milestone for UIndy as the Greyhounds’ eight titles are now tied for with the combined total of the league’s five other winners in the 16-year history of the event.  Northern Kentucky University has earned three titles, Drury owns two, and Southern Indiana, Lewis and SIU Edwardsville have each earned one.

The individual medalist race was captured by Southern Indiana’s Anastasia Carter, who earned a five-stroke victory with a 36-hole total of 145, marking the largest margin of victory in the conference meet since 2009.  Highlighted by a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday, the lone sub-par round of the tournament, the Screaming Eagles’ sophomore becomes the first USI linkster to win the conference crown since 2010 and the third medalist in school history.  She is now in the select company of former Eagles Angela Dehning (2010) and Alisha Luigs (2004), and now moves USI into a tie for second overall in the conference for most medalist honors earned.

UIndy’s Jaclyn Schindler (72-78-150) finished five strokes back in second, while UMSL’s Tayler Hoag (75-77—152) took her second straight top-three result at the conference meet after finishing second last year.  Fourth place went to Drury’s Margaret Alumno (81-73—154), whose 73 on Sunday tied USI’s Allison Koester for the low round of the day and third-lowest total of the event.  The Greyhounds’ Jenny Konop (75-80—155) and Illinois Springfield’s Casara Marsaglia (80-75—155) tied for fifth overall.

Following the event, the top-five finishers and ties joined the next five highest-ranked players according to Golfstat as All-Conference honorees.  In addition to Carter, Schindler, Hoag, Alumno, Konop and Marsaglia, UIndy’s Chanice Young, Amy Thompson and Molly Ward joined UMSL’s Bailey Hopper and Drury’s Lauren Michael on the All-GLVC squad.

Konop was also honored for the second consecutive season as the GLVC Player of the Year, based on her year-round player rating by Golfstat.  The honor is the sixth overall for the program and fifth in the last seven years as Kristi Piepenbrink won back-to-back honors in 2008 and 2009, and Lyndsay McBride took home the 2010 accolade.  Konop is just the third player in conference history to repeat as Player of the Year.

Her mentor, Brent Nicoson, was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the third straight season, just days after guiding his men's team to back-to-back conference championships.

Lewis’ Rachel Sweeney was honored as GLVC Freshman of the Year as the highest-rated newcomer by Golfstat.  She is just the second Flyer to win the award as Reeta Laakkonen earned the league’s first-ever Freshman of the Year award in 1998.
