INDIANAPOLIS – The Lewis University women’s indoor track and field team, led by NCAA Champion Amanda Farrough in the 5,000 meters, tied the GLVC record with a fourth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Division II Championships, held March 11-12 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.  In addition, 22 GLVC student-athletes earned a total of 29 All-America accolades – an improvement from last year when 21 standouts earned 26 awards.

The Flyers scored 31 points over the course of the two-day event to tie for fourth with host Pittsburg State.  The result matched former league member SIU Edwardsville’s record fourth-place finish that was earned at the 2008 NCAA Championships.  Indianapolis was the only other women’s squad to score this year, adding four points to finish tied for 38th.

On the men’s side, the Flyers tied for 11th overall with 18 points, followed by Southern Indiana in 26th with nine points.  Indianapolis (5) placed 36th right ahead of Missouri S&T (4) and William Jewell (4) tied for 38th.

A year after Lewis’ senior Rebecca Priesler and junior jumper Isaac Jean-Paul won national championships in the women’s pole vault and men’s high jump, respectively, Farrough earned the top of the podium in the 5,000 meters this season with a time of 16 minutes, 9.10 seconds.  The 2016 GLVC Cross Country Champion and Runner of the Year, who went on to place third in the 6,000-meter race at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, becomes just the third individual in GLVC history to win an NCAA title at the indoor meet.  Prior to Priesler’s win last year, Indianapolis’ Andrea Horban won the shot put in 2006.

Other impressive performances included Lewis’ Cierra Pulliam with a runner-up result in the triple jump, followed by third-place finishes by Farrough in the 3,000 meters, Southern Indiana’s Johnnie Guy in the 5,000 meters, and the Flyers’ 4x400-meter relay team.  UIndy finished fourth in that particular relay, while Jean-Paul placed fourth in the high jump as did teammate Sergio Miranda in the 800 meters for Lewis.

On Monday, 22 student-athletes earned a total of 29 All-America honors for their efforts, including 16 first-team accolades.  Student-athletes earned first-team U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events, including as a member of a relay.  Second-team honors were bestowed upon those finishing ninth through 12th.
