EAST PEORIA, Ill. – No. 1 University of Indianapolis has garnered the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship after defeating No. 2 University of Missouri-St. Louis, 7-1, at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
Six games were played on the final day after being completely washed out on Saturday, as Indianapolis’ victory was the second-ever tournament title for the program.
UIndy relied on GLVC Pitcher of the Year Morgan Foley to go the distance Friday and Sunday, as she pitched all but one inning during the Championship weekend with an unblemished 4-0 record, one no-hitter, two shutouts and 16 strikeouts in the final game.
Earlier in the day, UMSL barreled its way through the losers’ bracket, playing three games in order to reach the championship against UIndy. And despite a dominating performance against No. 3 University of Southern Indiana – a 10-0, five-inning win – in the game preceding the title tilt, the Tritons just didn’t have quite enough gas left in the tank to overcome the Hounds that had only played one game beforehand – an 8-0, five-inning victory past the Screaming Eagles.
Indianapolis got the offensive juices flowing in the bottom of the second inning versus UMSL, taking an early 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hounds tacked on another run via a homer, and the Tritons answered in the top of the fifth with a dinger of their own to close the gap at 5-1. However, the UMSL bats were quiet as that home run was just one of two hits for the squad all game. UIndy added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning before closing out the game in the top of the seventh for the final 7-1 win.
With the victory, Indianapolis earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament and will learn its opponent when the NCAA announces its championship field Monday at 10 a.m. ET. The selection show can be seen live on NCAA.com here.
