2015-16 Academic All-GLVC Honorees

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Monday that the 2015-16 season marked the first time in league history that more than 2,500 student-athletes have garnered Academic All-GLVC distinction.  A total of 2,584 honorees have been recognized, marking a six-percent increase from last year and the sixth-straight record season for the league as previous bests were set in 2010-11 (1,481), 2011-12 (1,681), 2012-13 (2,002), 2013-14 (2,360), and 2014-15 (2,431).

Not counting the 21 honorees from football associate members Lincoln University and Southwest Baptist University, the 2,563 honorees from full-time GLVC members averaged out to 160 selections per school, which also broke last season’s record average of 151.  Prior to last year, the per-school averages had been 147 in 2013-14, 124 in 2012-13, 105 in 2011-12, 98.5 in 2010-11 and 82.8 in 2009-10.

The Academic All-GLVC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes who meet a cumulative GPA of 3.30 over two semesters at the institution.

After seeing 114 students record a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2013-14 academic year, and 118 do so in 2014-15, a total of 179 individuals maintained an unblemished GPA this past season – a 52-percent increase.

In terms of total honorees by sport, baseball regained its crown by one honoree after losing it to women’s soccer last season.  Baseball led all conference sports with 265 honorees (+24 from 2015), followed by women’s soccer (264/+12), men’s soccer (231/+47), women’s track and field (228/+10), and football (190/+32) in the top five.

Counting indoor and outdoor track and field as one sport for each gender, 15 of the 18 sports equaled or increased its total number of recipients from the previous season, up from 11 a year ago.  Men’s soccer (231) posted a conference-best increase of 47 honorees from its mark of 184 honorees in 2015.

Rounding out the sport totals were softball (183/+4), men’s track and field (155/+2), volleyball (150/-6), women’s cross country (147/+3), women’s basketball (132/=0), women’s swimming and diving (100/+12), women’s golf (99/+6), men’s cross country (94/+12), women’s tennis (77/-2), men’s golf (73/+2), men’s swimming and diving (72/+8), men’s basketball (65/=0), and men’s tennis (59/-3).
