INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) recognized 137 men’s and women’s teams Tuesday as recipients of the 2015-16 Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year. The total of 137 honorees surpasses the previous conference record of 119 set last year.
The Saint Joseph’s College men’s tennis program registered the conference’s highest team GPA during the 2015-16 academic year with a 3.84. Finishing second was the Drury University women’s soccer team with a 3.78 GPA, followed by the Rockhurst women’s soccer team in third at 3.74.
After a 2014-15 campaign that saw a league record five schools each finish the season with 10 or more teams above a 3.30, a total of seven eclipsed the mark this season, led by Lewis University with 13 – a new conference mark. Bellarmine University, Rockhurst and Truman State University followed with 11 teams each, while Drury, Maryville University and McKendree University each boasted 10 teams.
Nine GLVC schools increased their totals from a year ago, while three others posted the same number. The University of Illinois Springfield and the University of Missouri-St. Louis tied for the largest academic growth by a GLVC school. UIS registered nine programs above the 3.30 GPA compared to four team honorees in 2014-15, while UMSL soared from two teams a year ago to seven squads this season.
There were a total of 105 women’s teams and 32 men’s squads tabbed for the honor, which marks an increase of eight and 10, respectively, from a year ago.
Volleyball continued its reign as the sport with the most honors, as 15 of the 16 member institutions saw their respective volleyball squads above a 3.30. While women’s soccer followed in second with 14 school winners, it was also a near sweep for women’s tennis and women’s cross country. Both sports field 14 programs and they each had 13 member institutions recognized. Women’s basketball and women’s golf each had 12 school honorees, while softball (11) was the only other sport with 10 or more program winners.
After tennis led all men’s sports for five straight seasons, cross country has now taken the title with eight programs recognized in 2015-16. Soccer trails with seven schools, followed by golf and tennis with six award winners each.
Women’s cross country (3), soccer (3) and volleyball (3) were all tied for the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list. The remaining seven schools were led by women’s golf (2), men’s tennis (2), women’s tennis (2), and men’s golf (1).
