This Week in GLVC Women's Basketball: Jan. 5 & 7

GLVC women's basketball returns to Conference play this week, beginning Thursday, Jan. 5. Seven of the eight games on Thursday will begin at 5:30 p.m. local time, while all eight contests on Saturday afternoon tip off at 1 p.m. local, and all 16 will be streamed live on the GLVCSN. Teams will cross divisions for these matchups and are highlighted by Saturday's top-25 battle between No. 17 Lewis and No. 14 Drury in Springfield, Mo.

Southern Indiana head coach Rick Stein earned his 300th career win after a 57-39 win over William Jewell. The other story of the night were the seven players who scored 20 or more points, including Hannah Albrecht with a game-high 23 in Saint Joseph's win Thursday night on 7-of-11 shooting, making 3-of-4 attempts from three and all six of her free throws. Truman's Cassidy Clark also netted 23 points in the win, while Illinois Springfield's Syerra Cunningham went for 20 points and 14 rebounds in the defeat. Two Panthers scored 20 points in Drury's win, including Heather Harman and Hailey Diestelkamp, who also added 10 rebounds for the double-double. Another 20-point scorer was Lewis' Jessica Kelliher, but the evening's top scorer was Indianapolis' Martha Burse, who turned in a 26-point effort while adding six rebounds, five steals, three blocks and three assists.

In a battle between two top-25 teams, No. 12 Drury had no trouble with No. 16 Lewis after overcoming a first quarter defecit in a 70-54 win to extend its winning streak to five. No. 4 Bellarmine remained undefeated in league play with a 70-56 win of its own against William Jewell, while Southern Indiana is the only other team unbeaten in Conference action following its close 84-79 victory over Rockhurst. Sarah Galvin posted an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Knights, while Screaming Eagle Hannah Wascher produced her own 18-13 double. Rockhurst's Marisa Lowe notched 30 points in the loss. UW-Parkside found the win column in the GLVC for the first time this season with a 78-64 road result at Missouri S&T, while Indianapolis and Truman State also took victories away from home. Elsewhere, Missouri-St. Louis defeated Saint Joseph's by a slim 54-53 score, and Illinois Springfield topped Quincy at home 82-53.
