Drury Swimming Earns Runner-Up Finish at NCAA D-II Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Drury University men's and women's swimming and diving programs both earned a runner-up trophy at the 2017 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama, after four days of competition. In addition, head coach Bryan Reynolds was named the 2016-17 NCAA-II National Women's Swimming Coach of the Year by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), it was announced Sunday (March 12).

Queens (N.C.) won the women's title with 467 points with the Panthers coming in second with 385. The Drury men's team also finished behind national champion Queens, which racked up 563.5 points to the Panthers total of 350. 

On the final day, the Drury women's squad managed a pair of national titles, as GLVC Swimmer and co-Freshman of the Year Bailee Nunn set an NCAA D-II record in the 200 Breaststroke and won the event by more than four seconds in 2:09.12. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Zuzanna Chwadeczko, Vera Johansson, Katya Rudenko and Nunn also took home a national championship with a time of 3:20.03.
 
For the men on Saturday, GLVC Freshman of the Year Joan Casanovas won the men's 1650 free national championship, posting a time of 15:11.20 to win the event by more than three seconds. 

Earlier in the week, Drury also earned national titles when Casanovas won the men's 500 free on Friday, beating defending champion Dion Dreesens from Queens with a time of 4:18.64. On day two, the women's 200 free relay group of Nunn, Johansson, Rudenko and Madeline Nelson combined for a time of 1:31.03 to win the national crown. Additionally, the 200 IM was won by Nunn in 1:56.51, and the 200 medley relay foursome of Rudenko, Chwadeczko, Johansson and Nunn broke the D-II record and won the event in 1:38.78 to open the national meet on Wednesday.

The strongest showing for the GLVC came in the men's 500 free with six swimmers placing in the top 16, including Casanovas with the win, teammate Konrad Stepien in ninth, Indianapolis pair of Guilherme Zavaneli and Vitor Botana in 11th and 12th, Lewis' Aidan Brennan in 15th and Drury's Reinbrecht in 16th. Six other events found four league swimmers represented in the finals, including the 1,000 free, 200 free, 100 breast, 800 free relay, 100 free and 400 free relay. There women's 100 fly also found four GLVC swimmers earning All-American recognition with Nunn in third, William Jewell's Paige Meredith in eighth, Johansson in 10th and Truman's Evyn Spencer finishing 16th.

Of note is the McKendree men's peformance in its program's first NCAA postseason meet. The team scored 34 points to finish 25th of 32 teams and had four races with a swimmer or relay team in the top 16, including the best showing in Daniel Buijs' sixth-place performance of the 200 back. The Bearcats' Matija Pucarevic was ninth in the 100 fly and both the 800 and 400 free relay squads placed 15th and 13th, respectively. 

Additionally, two Indianapolis divers put up All-American efforts as GLVC Diver of the Year Josh Zylstra placed ninth in the 3-meter diving and did one spot better in the 1-meter board competition. Payton Staman had the best showing with a fifth-place performance in the 1-meter event.

Including the aforementioned individuals and relay teams, 18 GLVC women's swimmers earned All-America accolades with a top-8 finish in their respective events, while 14 more picked up Honorable Mention All-American distinction for finishing in places 9-16. For the men, Conference swimmers garnered 28 All-American laurels, as 31 were named Honorable Mention.
