INDIANAPOLIS – University of Southern Indiana junior distance runner Bastian Grau captured the national title in the mile this past week at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The race win earned him first-team All-America honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, one of 18 All-America awards garnered by Great Lakes Valley Conference standouts at the national meet.
Grau crossed the line first in four minutes, 5.70 seconds, marking the second-fastest time in USI history behind Ben Kapsoiya's 4:04.44 at the 1999 NCAA II Indoor Championships.
With his title, Grau became the third Screaming Eagle to earn a national title during the indoor season, and the first since Tyler Pence won the 5,000-meters in 2015. Elly Rono earned a national title, also in the 5,000-meters, in 1998.
McKendree University sophomore Demontez McCray netted a second-place result in the 200 meters with a time of 21.18.
Southern Indiana paced four scoring teams from the GLVC with 19 points for a tie for 13th overall. McKendree (8) tied for 23rd, University of Indianapolis (3) finished tied for 42nd, and William Jewell College (2) tied for 49th.
On the women’s side, Bellarmine University (6) tied for 30th, Lewis University (2) tied for 49th, and McKendree (1) tied for 55th.
On Monday, 15 student-athletes earned a total of 18 All-America honors for their efforts, including 13 first-team accolades.
Student-athletes earned first-team U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events, including as a member of a relay. Second-team honors were bestowed upon those finishing ninth through 12th.
Below is a complete list of the GLVC’s 15 competitors and their 18 All-Americans honors:
