INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference saw 18 of its 22 student-athletes garner a total of 23 All-America honors this past weekend at the 2018 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, which took place at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The total of All-Americans is an increase from last year’s effort, which saw 15 competitors earn a total of 18 All-America accolades.
Student-athletes earned first-team U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors by virtue of finishing among the top eight in their events, including as a member of a relay. Second-team honors were bestowed upon those who finished ninth through 16th in their individual events, or on a relay team that finished ninth or 10th.
Lewis University sophomore Allie Heinzer led the way on the women’s side by earning two first-team accolades with a third-place finish in the 400 meters (54.74) and a fifth-place result in the 200 (24.28). Her teammate Cierra Pulliam, the GLVC Field Athlete of the Year, was fifth in the triple jump (12.45m) and sixth in the long jump (6.05m). Bellarmine University senior and GLVC Track Athlete of the Year Meghan Roby was the other female standout to earn two first-team All-America nods, as she was fourth in the 400 meters (54.94) and seventh as a member of the 4x400-meter relay (3:46.40), which also included sophomore Ashley Reyna-Padilla and seniors Bridgette Mangold and Amanda Schnabel.
Among the other notables, McKendree University junior Quincy McSweeney earned first-team distinction with a seventh-place result in the 800 meters (2:11.25) and was named to the second team with a ninth-place finish as a member of the 4x400-meter relay (3:47.47), which included freshmen Kaylee Fann and Tsitsi Mahachi, and senior Jordyn Looman.
University of Indianapolis junior thrower Katie Monk picked up a pair of second-team accolades after finishing ninth in both the shot put (14.95m) and weight throw (16.82m).
Competing in her lone event, Bellarmine junior Yashira Rhymer-Stuart earned first-team honors with a seventh-place finish in the high jump (1.74m).
On the men’s side, McKendree junior and GLVC Track Athlete of the Year DeMontez McCray was fourth in the 200 meters (21.17), while UIndy junior and GLVC Field Athlete of the Year Austin Hogan was eighth in the weight throw (19.74m).
Four other GLVC standouts received second-team All-America recognition, including two men and two women: UIndy senior Treyvon Matthews (11th, 60m Hurdles) and Lewis senior Bryce Holesinger (10th, Heptathlon), as well as Bellarmine senior Sarah Schuster (11th, 800m) and Lewis junior Lane Kadlec (12th, Shot Put).
In the women’s competition, Lewis led the conference contingent placing 15th overall with 17 points. Bellarmine was 22nd with nine points and McKendree tied for 53rd with two points. Indianapolis and Missouri S&T were represented in the meet but did not score.
