ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Semifinal action for the 2021 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament has been set for Saturday, following four quarterfinal matches on Friday at three locations in Romeoville and Plainfield, Illinois. All four higher-seeded teams advanced to the semifinals after quarterfinal victories, including Southwest Baptist University, University of Indianapolis, Drury University, and University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Playing in its first GLVC postseason event, 13th-ranked Southwest Baptist, the top seed in the West, sped through its match against the East’s No. 4 seed Lewis University, 5-0. The Bearcats picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 3 (6-0) and No. 2 (6-2), before getting the next two points from No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Spots 6 and 1 then finished simultaneously to get both a fourth and fifth point in the final scorebook.
In Match 2, #3E Illinois Springfield was competing with just four players and fell to #2W Missouri-St. Louis, 4-0. The Prairie Stars had to default at No. 3 doubles, while the Tritons picked up a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, for the first point of the match. In singles action, UIS defaulted at Nos. 5 and 6, while UMSL’s third position – Maja Lietzau – won 6-4, 6-4 for the clinching point.
No. 3 West Drury picked up a 4-1 victory over No. 2 East Maryville University, while No. 1 East Indianapolis made quick work of No. 4 West Quincy with a 4-0 sweep in the first match.
The Tritons will now meet the Greyhounds and the Bearcats will face the Panthers in Saturday’s semifinals, as both matches will begin at 9 a.m. Central Time, respectively at Lewis and Romeoville High School.
