Four GLVC Men's Lacrosse Programs Garner Major Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Thursday afternoon its 2021 All-Conference teams and major award winners, with 53 student-athletes garnering recognition, seven earning James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees, and Quincy University voted as the team sportsmanship winner.

Lindenwood University senior Carter Collins was named GLVC Player of the Year, while University of Indianapolis junior Kyle Basch (Specialist), Davenport University sophomore Daniel Milano (Goalkeeper), and Maryville University rookie Connor Robinson (Freshman) also earned their respective major award. Maryville mentor Scott Stark was also dubbed the league’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Saints to a GLVC Championship Tournament appearance in his first season.

Collins led a potent Lindenwood offense this spring, topping the Conference with 33 goals in 11 games and ranking second among league competitors with 44 points. The senior scored three or more goals on eight occasions this season, including four three times, and five twice. In his pair of five-goal contests – each coming against UIndy – Collins also scooped up eight ground balls and caused two turnovers. The Prior Lake, Minn., product netted a hat trick in each of the team’s first five games and enters this Conference tournament having scored eight times in the past two contests. Collins is Lindenwood’s first GLVC major award winner, as the Lions joined the league prior to the 2019-20 academic year. The senior earned GLVC Offensive Player of the Week once this spring after registering eight points in a win over UIndy on March 13.

Basch was a key contributor in the Greyhound midfield in 2021, recording 29 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in nine games. UIndy surrendered eight or less goals five times this spring, including a season-best four in the win over Quincy University on March 20. Basch had a career day against Lewis on March 27, scooping up eight ground balls and causing four turnovers. Basch also earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Week recognition on March 29 following his eight ground-ball, four caused-turnover performance against Lewis. In the team’s first win over Maryville on March 31, the Ada, Mich., product tallied four ground balls. This marks Basch’s first All-GLVC honor and UIndy’s first Specialty Player of the Year designation in league history.

Milano stood out between the pipes during Davenport’s first season in the GLVC. The sophomore led the league with 151 saves (16.8 per game), while recording a .557 save percentage. The netminder made double-digit saves in all nine games this spring, including a season-high 25 against Rockhurst on March 27. In seven of the team’s nine contests, Milano made more saves than he allowed goals, and held Quincy to just six scores on March 13. Milano played all 60 minutes in each of his games, totaling 540 in net in his sophomore campaign. Milano is the first Panther to claim a GLVC major award, as Davenport joined the league as an associate member for men’s lacrosse this spring.

Robinson was also a force in net for Maryville this spring, earning the coaches’ vote as the top rookie in 2021. The Buffalo, N.Y., native ranked second among GLVC goalkeepers in goals-against average (GAA) with an 8.14 mark and fifth with 86 saves across 10 contests. Robinson allowed just four goals in the Saints’ win over Davenport on April 17 and surrendered seven or less opponent scores on four occasions. The freshman made double-digit saves four times, including a season-high 22 against Lindenwood in the spring opener on February 24. In addition, Robinson scooped up 16 ground balls. Robinson is second player from Maryville to earn Freshman of the Year honors, the first being Jayden Fraser in 2019. The freshman was named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions this spring, including March 1 and April 12.

Stark guided the Saints to the No. 4 seed in this season’s Conference postseason tournament, earning wins against two ranked opponents along the way. Maryville knocked off then-No. 13 Lindenwood before defeating then-No. 13 Rockhurst University on March 13. The Saints rose as high as No. 12 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) coaches poll on March 29. Overall, 10 Saints earned All-GLVC recognition on Thursday, with Robinson being named the league’s top rookie. Heading into the postseason, Maryville ranks 10th in NCAA Division II in scoring defense. Stark is Maryville’s first leader named Coach of the Year, now marking the third different program to earn the distinction after Young Harris College’s Forrest MacConnell (2018) and UIndy’s Greg Stocks (2019).

Joining Collins, Basch, and Milano on All-GLVC First Team, include: Lindenwood’s Rob Tucker and Brian Kallberg; UIndy’s Drew Billig, Brian Robb, Kansai Garey, and Josh Jackson; Maryville’s Jake Foster and Jake Socia; Rockhurst’s Graden Soucy; and Lewis University’s Peter Carlson.

The league also recognized Quincy as its GLVC Men’s Lacrosse James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient, as well as seven GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award Individual nominees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners.
