GLVC 'Good Sportsmanship' Initiative
In an effort to promote the good sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the league has introduced an initiative to support and promote the GLVC sportsmanship philosophy.
In addition to awards presented to the institution whose teams are recognized by their peers as best representing the sportsmanship ideals, those instances of good sportsmanship recognized by administrators and coaches throughout the league will be highlighted by the league.

The 2007 GLVC Cross Country Championship fell on the chilly morning of October 20th. Most women's teams showed up to the cross country course at Butler around 7:30 a.m. The weather was typical cross country weather, mid-40s with a cold breeze. There was dew on the grass when we showed up to the field. Many teams had set up their camps with tarps and blankets. It seemed like we were the only team that did not bring cold weather gear. After looking for other options, the women's team was convinced that sitting on the bus was the way to go. I decided to talk to Theresa Dexl of Lewis University, who I had met at the GLVC SAAC Meeting in Indianapolis. After telling her our situation, she offered us an extra tarp that Lewis had brought to the meet. We were able to find a spot on the grass to lay the tarp and keep our bags dray as well as adjust to the late-October weather. Lewis and SIUE have often been considered rivals in the past but shows up sportsmanship like this remind us that we're all out there for the same reason. The love of the sport.

I would like to make a combined sportsmanship comment on both the University of Missouri St. Louis and Drury University’s volleyball programs. On Saturday Oct. 27th we had a power outage in Springfield that affected Weiser Gym after the second game had been completed. The solution was to move the match to Glendale High School across town and pick up at the beginning of game three. The level of play was tremendous and UMSL won a tightly contested match 3-2.
I wanted to comment on the professionalism of both coaches Josh Lauer and Amy Gardner. They looked for a solution and led their teams in a manner that should make both institutions proud. The match was played at a very high level and had major playoff implications. The coaches did a great job of keeping everything in perspective and just played the game and let the student-athletes decide the outcome. A job well done by all the coaches, student-athletes, officials, and fans that participated in this rather unusual match.

Coach MacKenzie and Coach Musso (Quincy University),
I wanted to say Thank You to you and your student athletes and commend them for way in which they treated our facilities.
As the athletic trainer, part of my responsibilities is to provide the hospitality services for our visiting teams (water, ice, shower towels, etc). Many times after a game the bench area has cups and trash on the ground and worse when I go into the locker room after the visiting team has left and the locker room is trashed; cups, tape, mud, and trash lying on the floor, showers still running, shower towels thrown in the trash cans, sinks covered in mud, and the list goes on.
Not with Quincy University the benches were picked up. The locker room was in good condition; showers were off, trash was in the trash can, and the shower towels were still in the bag.
I hope that when we play on the road, that we also treat our host’s facilities with the same respect that your student athletes showed towards our facilities. Thank you so much.

I have to tell you that Bellarmine's Men's Golf team acts with more class, poise, and maturity than any other team in the field. This was best exhibited a month ago when Andrew Jewell(Northern Kentucky Men's Golfer) passed away. Thomas Moore led a prayer circle the morning of the first day of the Regional following his passing. Coach Ernie Denham, and three of his players (Kyle Leach, Brooks Herrick, and and Thomas Moore) made the drive up to attend the memorial service. I know for sure that more of them would have been there if they did not have obligations with their classes. They sat behind the team and I can't tell you how much it meant to the men that they were there. This was a true display of heart by these young men.
