The 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship will be held for at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Illinois, on April 17-19. This year's event marks the 38th annual GLVC Men's Golf Championship.
The GLVC Championship features a 54-hole stroke play event with the top-four teams following stroke play competing in medal/match play to determine the Conference champion. A total of 36 holes are played on Sunday, April 17, followed by 18 holes on Monday, April 18. The semifinals and finals of match play will take place on Tuesday, April 19.
The GLVC Sports Network will once again provide free live action of the event, consisting of morning tee-times and post-round coverage. A complete schedule will be announced during championship week.
Indianapolis has captured 15 GLVC Championships, followed by Lewis and Northern Kentucky with six each and Bellarmine with five. Southern Indiana, UW-Parkside, Missouri-St. Louis and former league-member Ashland have all claimed the GLVC Championship once.
The top-five finishers at the GLVC Men's Golf Championship are named All-GLVC, and the top finishing individual after 54-hole medal play earns medalist honors. The remaining golf awards, including All-Conference positions Nos. 6-10, as well as GLVC Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year, are named following the spring season.
Last season, No. 3 seed Missouri-St. Louis defeated No. 1 Lewis 3-2 in medal/match play competition at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. The win gave UMSL its first ever league title.
Both the Tritons and Flyers earned 3-2 medal/match play semifinal victories over No. 2 Indianapolis and No. 4 Illinois Springfield, respectively, to advance to the afternoon finals.
Lewis' Alex Thode shot a 2-under-par 214 (71-72-72) to earn the nine-stroke victory over Illinois Springfield's Talon Supak (68-79-76--223). UMSL's Julien de Poyen finished one shot back in third at (224) (72-73-79).
Admission to the 2016 GLVC Men's Golf Championship is free to the public.
