Greyhound men win back-to-back GLVC Indoor Track & Field titles

2011 GLVC Championships Final Results
SOMERS, Wis.- The Greyhound men's track & field squad claimed its second-consecutive GLVC Indoor Track & Field championship Saturday at the Frank J. Petretti Fieldhouse on the campus of Wisconsin-Parkside. UIndy's women took second as a team.
Greyhound head coach Scott Fangman was named the men's indoor Coach of the Year, his 10th time receiving the honor. UIndy's Robert Gardner earned men's Track Athlete of the Year, and Angelique McNeal earned the women's Track Athlete of the Year honor.
The UIndy men's team put up a total of 207 team points to take the win. Missouri S&T finished second with 126 total points.
Gardner defended his GLVC Track Athlete of the Week honors by topping the field in the 400-meter dash wit ha time of 48.16. His Greyhound teammate Jerel Flournoy took third in the event, finishing in 48.85. The pair topped the field in the 200-meter dash, with Gardner winning with a mark of 21.98 and Flournoy coming in behind him in 22.30.
For the Greyhound men, Kevin Keene took the top spot in the men's heptathlon with 4686 total points. Keene won the 55-meter dash en route to the overall win.
UIndy took the top three spots in the weight throw, amassing 24 team points. Matt Royer took top billing with a toss of 19.31 meters, Nikko Peebles followed in second place with a mark of 17.52 meters and Marcus Montgomery took third with a throw of 17.19 meters. Peebles' mark was his first NCAA provisional mark of the season. Royer also took second in the shot put, with a mark of 16.34 meters.
Jerel Flournoy and Randall Hudi took the top two spots in the long jump, with Flournoy hitting 7.18 meters and Hudi jumping 7.11 meters. Both marks were NCAA provisional marks. In the high jump, Greyhounds took second and third, with Zach Little and Braden Miller racking up points for UIndy.
The Greyhound 4x200 meter relay squad also won their event, with the team of Carl Smith, Nick Brittain, Jermel Kindred and Gardner posting a time of 1:29.20. Also on the track, Mark Martinez took second in the one-mile run for UIndy, crossing the finish line in 4:25.51.
The men closed out the day with a win in the 4x400 relay, with the team of Flournoy, Smith, Kindred and Gardner posting a time of 3:15.87.
The Greyhound women amassed 145.50 team points, falling just shy of Lewis' 157 points.
McNeal won the 55-meter dash for the Greyhounds in 7.22. She also topped the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.04, and joined the women's 4x400 relay to top the field with a time of 3:56.08.
Valerie Wagner won the long jump for the UIndy women with a leap of 5.56 meters, an NCAA provisional mark. The Greyhounds scored 20 points in the shot put, with Katy Watson (2nd-12.08m), Caitlin Gannaway (3rd-11.64m), Isabelle May (4th-11.46m) and Jordyn Keele (8th-9.95m) all placing.
On the track, the UIndy women's 4x200 meter relay of Saidat Sanuth, Ashley Burkins, Haley Miller and Kenya Owens took second with a time of 1:44.14.
UIndy's Shirah Bennett (2nd-8.71) and Jillian Reisinger(3rd-8.86) scored 14 team points with their places in the 55-meter hurdles. Kierra Allen took second in the 400-meter dash for UIndy with a time of 57.65.
The Greyhounds now await the NCAA's announcement of the 2011 Indoor Track & Field Championship field. Royer has already automatically qualified with his toss of 20.10 at the Boilermaker Invitational Feb. 19.
