Lewis University is set to defend its title at the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship, which will be held at the Country Club of Paducah in Paducah, Ky., on April 15-17, 2012. This year's event marks the 34th annual GLVC Men's Golf Championship.

The 2012 event is the first year the event will be held in Paducah. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the Country Club of Paducah features a 6,879-yard par 72 golf course with a course rating of 74.4 and a slope rating of 134.

The tournament features a 54-hole stroke play event with the top four teams following stroke play competing in match play to determine the conference champion. A total of 18 holes are played on Sunday, April 15, followed by 36 holes on Monday, April 16. The semifinals and finals of match play will take place on Tuesday, April 17.

Fourteen conference teams have been seeded for Sunday’s first round based off of regional rankings determined by Golfstat.  Northern Kentucky earned the top seed having also been ranked No. 1 regionally and 31st nationally.  The Norse most recently placed third at the fourth regional tournament in Noblesville, Ind., April 8-9, and were led by medalist Jones Brown’s rounds of 70 and 75.  A week prior to the tournament, Brown's birdie during a one-hole sudden death playoff helped NKU capture first place at The Jewell at Cherry Blossom Golf Course.  The Norse ended the two-round event tied for first with Indianapolis, turning in a two-day total of 584 (287-297).

UIndy is the second seed in the tournament as well as in the Midwest Region.  At the 25-team Jewell event, the Greyhounds (285-299—584) managed to get into a playoff for the title and was led in the event by senior Aaron Monson (69-74—143), who tied for fourth among the event's 124 participants.  Monson also guided the Hounds to runner-up honors at the Parkside Spring Invitational, which was held three weeks ago at Otter Creek Golf Course in nearby Columbus, Ind.  He finished second at 5-under-par 139 (71-68), three strokes back of medalist David Shearn of Bellarmine.

Shearn opened with a school-record 8-under 64 and followed with an even-par 72 to claim the individual crown to lead the Knights.  Bellarmine, seeded third this weekend and fifth in the Midwest, is also paced by junior Bryan Ratterman, who completed three events in March a combined 4-under-par with an average of 71.33 to earn GLVC Golfer of the Month honors.  His efforts helped BU tie for second at the Northern Kentucky Spring Classic, place third at the Parkside Spring Invitational, and a fifth-place finish at The Jewell.

Missouri-St. Louis (Midwest No. 10), Drury (12), Rockhurst (14) and Illinois Springfield (15) round out the top-seven seeds at the GLVC Championship, while UW-Parkside (16), Lewis (17), Kentucky Wesleyan (18), Maryville (19), Quincy (21), Southern Indiana (23), and Saint Joseph’s (26) complete the 14-team field.

Indianapolis has captured 13 GLVC Men’s Golf Championships, followed by Lewis with six, and Bellarmine and Northern Kentucky with five each.  Southern Indiana, UW-Parkside and former league-member Ashland have all claimed the GLVC Men's Golf Championship once.

Last season, the Flyers won the rain-shortened GLVC Men's Golf Championship at Panther Creek Country Club by finishing with a 36-hole total of 584 to defeat Northern Kentucky by seven strokes.

The top five finishers at the GLVC Men's Golf Championship are named All-GLVC and the top finishing individual after 54-hole medal play earns medalist honors. The remaining golf awards are named following the spring season.

Admission to the 2012 GLVC Men's Golf Championship is free to the public.
