The SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Basketball Championship will be conducted for the 15th consecutive year in 2012, with the Springfield Prairie Capital Convention Center serving as the site of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final on March 1, 3 & 4.
The Prairie Captial Convention Center is located in Springfield, Ill. and will provide a neutral site for the 2012 Women's Championship.
The top four teams from the GLVC East and West Divisions, along wih four wild card teams, will qualifty for the 12-team tournament on the basis of the highest percentage of conference games won during the regular season. The top four seeds based on Section 3.C.2.b of the GLVC Handbook will receive first round bye. Seeds 5-8 will host first round games on campus on the weekend of Feb. 25-26. The tournament field will be reseeded following first round competition with the remaining eight teams advancing to Springfield.
There have been six different teams claim the GLVC Basketball Tournament title. Drury (2), Indianapolis (1), Lewis (2), Northern Kentucky (4), Quincy (2), and Southern Indiana (3) have all won tournament crowns. Northern Kentucky leads all institutions with four tournament titles and the Norse claimed their most recent crown in 2009.
Last year, Lewis defeated Indianapolis in the championship game of the 2011 GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Flyers claimed their second league title and became the first No. 9 seed to win the GLVC Basketball Tournament.
The 2012 GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament winner will be named the GLVC Champion and earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament.
*Prior to the 2004-05 season, the GLVC Champion was determined by the regular season standings, with the automatic qualifer determined by the GLVC Tournament.
